A theft at the Iowa State College band studio in Ames stole about $2,000 in instruments. Dorothy McDade of Ogden owns a flute and piccolo worth $400 missing Friday morning. Three instruments were college owned while three belonged to concert band members.
Mrs. Edward M. Hotbauer, 20, of Carroll, died at midnight after a car and a truck collided two miles west of Carroll on Highway 30. She worked at the Des Moines ordnance plant. Three other people in the car were injured.
Des Moines reports Iowa state liquor stores have sold over one million dollars in war bonds this month and aim for two million. Chairman M L Curtis credited store managers and staff for cooperative sales, noting monthly bonds near half a million before April.
Nine additional aviation cadets depart Ottumwa for Pensacola Florida after completing training at the Ottumwa naval air station. A total of 37 cadets have graduated from Ottumwa with 85 to 105 hours in the air plus strict ground and athletic work.
Washington announced that 14 percent of marine aviation officers were advanced, including two Iowans moving from captain to major. Harlan Rogers of Webb and Bowman H. Sweet of Sivourney earned the promotion.

Funeral services for John F. Durst age 78 will be held tomorrow afternoon at the Wellman Methodist church. Burial will be at Wellman with Bidwell funeral home in charge and the pastor officiating. Durst died Sunday morning at his son in law and daughter Becks home in Greeley Colorado after years of ill health. He was born September 15 1865 and lived around Washington Kalona and Wellman in business and seed farming. He is survived by son Lloyd Durst of Wellman daughter Vera Beck of Greeley granddaughter Marian Durst sister Dora Durst and brother Arthur C all of Iowa entries with one son Duane deceased.
