The city will hire Howard R. Green company to conduct a topographical survey and prepare plans for a sanitary sewer system. Engineer C P Lewellen is due in Washington next week to oversee the investigation and help decide on a possible new system and cost estimates. A sewer map will be created and kept as an official record for future improvements.
Five representatives of Washington high school will travel to Iowa City next week for the state high school music contest. Dates are Friday and Saturday May 6 and 7. The boys quartet—Clifford Brady, Clifford Baker, Dave Springman, and Harvey Burham—after winning at Sigourney, are coached by Edith Boileau. Thora Warner, alto soloist and another Sigourney winner, is expected to perform strongly against rivals statewide.
Four year old James McCarthy of Chelsea, Massachusetts, jumped on a bed, went through an open window, and fell three stories. He survived with a broken leg and bruises after hospital treatment.
In Sioux City Iowa April 27 1930 Federal Judge Thomas Munger ordered distribution of 41000 of the packing company funds among creditors final disbursement. The 15 percent dividend had been paid representing 165000 on claims of about 1300000. The case lasted seven years with receivership and frenzied litigation culminating in the 3 million plant sale to Swift and Company for a pittance.
Superintendent J H Peet compiles responses from towns with junior colleges showing unanimous support for the movement. Respondents say the college is beyond experimentation and costs are not excessive though some note annual expenses. An official cites potential savings of about 14 000 by educating students locally.
Milwaukee eastbound trains were diverted to Rock Island tracks from Muscatine to Washington due to a land slide at Arden near Muscatine. This marks the third detour in recent weeks caused by heavy rains loosening earth on the right of way.
Indiana politicians mourn former U S senator Albert J. Beveridge who died at 6 30 am after years of heart disease. Survived by widow and daughter Mrs E B Eden. President Coolidge and Postmaster General New offered condolences noting his scholarship literature and political impact.
Forty club women from Washington community traveled to Kalona for the annual Washington County federated clubs conference. Representing are the Fortnightly Nineteenth Century and Harmony clubs. Mrs C W McLaughlin serves as district president and was on the program. Nearly one hundred women from various communities attended the sessions at the Christian church, which included luncheon hosted by the church women. Mrs E S Coffey of Wellman, county chairman, was re elected to the post. A detailed report will appear tomorrow on the society page.
Washington county will increase dog license costs after May 10. Dogs over three months old must be licensed, with $1 for males and $2 for females. Delinquent owners will have their names published by June 1, incurring a $1 penalty per dog and a 30 cent publication fee. About 1,800 dogs exist, 1,065 licensed so far.
Mrs F Boller was summoned to Wayland this morning due to her mother Mrs Weare’s illness. The report notes several soft spots on the railway line requiring trains to proceed cautiously.
Hollywood police investigated the killing of 32 year old screen player Tom Kerrick found shot in his dining room after an early morning party with extras Iris Burns and Henry Isabel being sought for questioning. Mrs Kerrick acknowledged drinks were served but could not identify the shooter. A revolver was recovered beneath a table.
Washington Prep hosts a triangular county track meet with Wellman West Chester and Washington. Wellman relies on Benny Ulin a javelin ace near 400 feet while others prepare for strong field events. Prelims start at ten with finals at 1 45 and 25 cent student admissions for the afternoon session.
The Country Club Cavaliers a new five piece orchestra performed at the Y s Men’s weekly dinner in Washington. Members Milburn McKay cornet Lewis Warren slide trombone Tom Carson sax Guy Carlton drums and Mrs Ives McKay piano marked their public debut after weeks of rehearsal. William Stewart provided the boy reader program with several numbers.
Mrs Neill Gammon returned home after a day spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs John Ramge in town.
The Steamer Vicksburg rescued 300 refugees marooned on the Sunflower river bridge at Hollandale Mississippi. No lives were lost. The vessel will land the refugees in Vicksburg tonight as relief efforts continue. Federal aid plans include farm-loan relief and debt extensions for flood victims.
A Washington community charity drive boosts flood relief with $500 raised after a $200 check sent to St. Louis. Rev. J Reade McCrory urges daily gifts, with two local firms contributing $20 each and more donations left at banks.
In Vicksburg and nearby areas, a close guard remained over the black refugee population after labor agents were spotted trying to persuade the men and women not to return to plantations once the flood recedes.
John Gibson died in Hot Springs Arkansas where he had been for weeks for treatment. W F Gardner of Ainsworth far from home since April 17 sent letters describing extreme flood conditions. He plans to bring Gibson's body to Ainsworth for burial but floods delay return.
Mildred Bowers of Washington Iowa will graduate from DePauw University Greencastle on June 15 with a bachelor of arts in English Literature. She attended Cornell College in her first two years and was active in the Girls' Rifle club the Messiah performance and the Women's Athletic association. She is a member of Delta Zeta sorority.
Miss Lucille Willis of Keota visits her sister Miss Louise Willis who had an operation at the county hospital last week. Lucile will also visit the home of her aunt Mrs. Arthur Saunders.
