A report notes regulars gather on Saturdays and Sundays for drinking in Washingford temperance town. Authorities target a local “jag house” and plan to close it. Two drunks faced the Mayor with fines and later four cases resulted in three pleas guilty with fines of 2.50 5.00 and 10.00 while one case went to trial.
Miss Cora Bessie Chilcote aged 15, daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas Chilcote, died yesterday at 7 pm. Born and raised in the city, the family receives widespread sympathy. The funeral is set for Tuesday at 2 pm from the family residence in South Washington with burial in the city cemetery.
The Roman block letter engraving becomes common for visiting cards as two sheet quality cards rise in favor. Cards shrink for both men and women with finer script, closer to English style than Parisian flourishes. The Roman plate is English and suits London fashion, costing more than script engraving. H H Smith living in Henry County chased a wolf into a border area and captured it. The animal was killed near the Court House after pleas from Humane Society supporters. Last week the district paid $27 in bounty, a record for years.
The advertisement asserts Hall's Catarrh Cure can cure catarrh at all stages as a constitutional disease. It states the medicine is taken internally and acts on blood and mucous surfaces to destroy the disease's foundation and strengthen the patient. The firm offers one hundred dollars to any case it fails to cure and invites testimonials.

Lew Gormley Crawfordsville spent the day in the county seat. J Hite moved horses for Buffalo N Y from B N W yards. Wagner's track hosted horse races attracting local riders. Mr and Mrs J Q Ross Winfield visited. Ross leads local clothing. Mr and Mrs Carmichael south of town adopted a child from Davenport Home Finders Society. Square improvements proceed with trash removal and new drains fronting business districts.

American actor Clay Clement, born in Illinois and educated in Chicago, appeared at the Columbia last night in his play The New Dominion. The large crowd acclaimed him though not as warmly as before, and he was brought before the curtain after each act with the audience cheering and begging a final bow. The Tribune and Chronicle laud him as a consummate artist in high comedy character.
The 1. O. O. F. celebration in Keota on Saturday attracted an enormous audience with lodges from Keokuk and Washington counties attending. The K. P. Band of Oskaloosa provided music and D. W. Hamilton of Sigourney delivered the day’s address. The Y P S C E of the Christian church announces a Crazy T event Friday May 1 in Smouse's room with supper 15 cents, two for 25 cents.
