Chicago greeted Gen. Douglas MacArthur with a massive midwestern welcome at Midway Airport. A two hour motorcade through the 23 mile route drew millions or viewers and thousands of onlookers as schools closed and businesses paused for the event.
J Robert Ashcroft director of religious education at Central Bible Institute Springfield Missouri will be evening speaker at Christian Tabernacle Sunday night at 7 50 Yelock He will lecture on theology and psychology and also address the Young People group before the service Rev W J Stevens pastor urges attendance by all concerned with current world conditions.
A marriage license was issued at the courthouse today to Paul Raymond Rebling of Brighton and Donna Jean Hauenstein of Wayland.
Bill Chadwick of Sigourney recalls Iowa weather history, noting a May 25 1925 killing frost the latest on record and comparing winters and springs of 1912 1923 to the present. He claims blizzards in 1923 and recounts births and dates, inviting other old timers to contribute memories.
Ad notices announce a weekly Bible class starting Friday night at 8 o'clock. The sessions will be held on the third floor of the Morrison building above Benner Food store at the K P lodge hall. Rev McBirnie, a southern Baptist minister, will teach. He is a seminary and college graduate who has traveled widely in the United States and Europe.
Ninety-nine Washington high school students are named on the honor roll for the fifth six weeks. The list from principal Robert Everetts includes 26 seniors, 27 juniors, 17 sophomores and 23 freshmen with many named individuals across all classes.
Washington Ys Men plan informal tea and a YMCA gathering for State University of Iowa foreign students. The guests arriving Saturday will stay in midwestern homes and share their living conditions in a roll call style event.
The Mississippi River floodfront neared 21.1 feet at Muscatine after a 20.7 reading with officials fearing dike breaches. National Guardsmen, volunteers and sandbag barriers guarded the levees as 1,200 residents evacuated and Davenport reported an 18.1 foot crest spilling across 240 blocks.
A group of 30 Washington high school students will represent the local school at the state high school music contest for soloists and ensemble groups on Friday and Saturday, April 27 and 28. Four students Betty Kunik John Winga Pat Berry and Margarette McCleery will be in Grinnell all day Friday. The others will join later. The group includes soloists Dan Brindley Bill Wessler Paul Grossheim Marilyn Leet Betty Kunik John Winga Edward Winga Maxine Crone Charles Luckenbill Eva Blattner Marolyn Fenn Norma Eatinger conductors Edward Winga Betty Kunik John Winga and ensembles Ray Tweeten Douglas Whitehead Gus Mast Pat Thompson Reta Ahrens Nancy Burham Marilou Robertson.
Washington Kiwanis club met at noon in the YMCA Community room with a program arranged by Rob ert Ferrell of the high school. Performers included the Slippery Four quartet Paul Grogssheim Bill Wessler Dan Brindley and Charles Luckenbill where Wessler also sang a solo. The girls sextet Marilyn Cook Carla Bennell Maxine Crone Marilyn Mouser Joanna Krabill and Janice Booth also performed.
All Christian churches of Washington and Keokuk counties join in Rural Life Sunday on April 29 at 2:30 p.m. in Keota Christian church. Rev. Sam P. Williamson of Fairfield Christian church is the afternoon speaker. Rev. C. P. Shepard chairs the event and sponsors The God’s Portion Plan. Also speaking are Rev. T. C. Polk of Washington and C. W. Baker, Sigourney extension director.

President Truman told a news conference he has no plan to gag General Douglas MacArthur or Maj. Gen. Courtney Whitney. He said MacArthur is free to speak and travel, and Whitney likewise, while acknowledging ongoing control limits. He refused to discuss Whitney’s remarks or Wake Island apology reports and dismissed Hoffman as secretary of state.
The Washington YMCA will hold its annual meeting Tuesday May 4 at 6 30 PM with election of five board members a key item. Ed Zeller Cedar Rapids YMCA will speak for the evening as announced by John C Owen. Dinner reservations and cards will be mailed to members and can also be made by telephone. RE Morrison Jr YMCA president will preside.
Tucker Chevrolet marks 33 years in business at its longtime Washington location. The firm began as Tucker & Eicher in 1918 during World War I, founded by Les Eicher and Claude Tucker, and later secured the Chevrolet franchise in 1925. Gene Tucker, current manager, recently reached 323 years of service as a playful note.
The 37 voice A Cappella choir from Sioux Falls College will perform a sacred concert at First Baptist Church tonight at o'clock. Dr. Evan Reiff, college president, said the Muscatine concert was canceled due to flooding, enabling the Sioux Falls group to appear here. Directed by Dr. Lee Bright, the choir has broadcast on KELO and led the National Champion Sioux Falls Legion Chorus. Admission is free with a voluntary offering.
The United Presbyterian church announces a one week preaching mission starting Monday April 30 and ending Sunday May 6 to mark Pentecost. Dr Charles L Hussey D D secretary of the boards of pensions and ministerial relief will preach each evening at 8 with special music. Hussey formerly led First United Presbyterian in Philadelphia and has roots in Illinois and Kansas. Mrs Arthur Rathmell of Crawfordsville returned from Children’s Hospital, Iowa City, with Mrs Margaret Engel to care for her.
UN forces on the west central Korean front withdrew five miles but stopped Red armies 17 miles northwest of Seoul. The line moved to the Pukhan river while UN troops north of Chunchon set new lines after blowing the Mo Jin bridge. An officer said UN forces were trading ground for blood and inflicting heavy losses on the enemy for each yard gained.
The Washington Baptist church hosted Scout Charter Night during its fellowship evening. Iowa River Valley Council officials and local Scout leaders presented charters and badges for Troops 38 and 35, with Eagle Scout Edward Jarrard in attendance and a film shown to close the program.
Fair skies and warmer conditions across Des Moines this afternoon with highs 55 to 65. Clouds increase tonight with light showers in the far west and lows 40 to 48. Friday looks partly cloudy and warmer with scattered showers and a high of 65 to 75 as winds shift from east to southeast then southerly.
