Ames Sphen Vincent Ben, a noted American poet and 1928 Pulitzer Prize winner, accepts invitation to lead the third Literature in Life series at Iowa State College this fall. Dr J Raymond Derby, head of the English department, announces the plan.

Iowa City Mrs H C Rexroat a former cook files a $370 suit against the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity alleging violation of a verbal contract. The action names the defendant and seeks damages in the amount of 370 dollars.
Marshalltown report says an autopsy was performed in the death of 59 year old Minnie Proven. Her body was found in a pasture on the south outskirts of town. Coroner Rodney Wells announced stomach contents will be sent to Iowa City for analysis and the case remains open pending the report.

Three Harlan teachers signed contracts for next year with higher salaries, announced by district officials. The move signals improved pay in the school system as teachers commit to continue employment.
Stockton riot fallout prompts a state assembly probe into the bloody cannery strike. Police and tear gas and gunfire wounded several workers as 1,500 farmers joined a 3,000 strong cannery and farm labor rally. A five hour Sacramento peace conference failed to resolve the dispute.

Los Angeles April 26 In a bitter trial Roberta Semple daughter of Aimee Semple McPherson won 2000 in a case against Will Andrews Temple attorney. Judge Clarence L. Kincaid warned that ongoing infighting among Angelus Temple figures could imperil the church’s future and lead to collapse.
Funeral services for Mrs. John Messenger were held Sunday afternoon at L. A. Jones funeral home with Rev. M. C. Carstensen of the Baptist church officiating. Pallbearers were Ray Watkins Elwood Glasgow E B Hammer Tom Dodd Floyd Murdock and Forrest Beaman. Burial followed at Elm Grove cemetery.
An overheated furnace pipes sparked a fire at the Clarinda insane hospital early today, threatening 175 patients. Fire crews battled the blaze for nearly three hours, moving patients to safety as flames confined to the basement and most damage came from water. Superintendent R G Smith reported no patient injuries or trouble during evacuation.
Vern J. Doudna of Henry county filed an appeal to the Iowa Supreme Court after a Henry county court sentence of seven years in the penitentiary for passing a worthless check on the First Bank and Trust Company of Ottumwa in payment for hogs bought from Kathryn Brandmeyer.
President Roosevelt issued orders directing that no government officer or employee may trade on the stock exchange for purely speculative purposes, effective immediately in Washington.
United States Steel at Carnegie-Illinois abandoned sponsorship of company unions. An attorney, William Beye, told the National Labor Relations Board that, in line with a Wagner Act Supreme Court decision, the subsidiary would no longer sponsor employee organization.
The Supreme Court granted the government's petition for review of the constitutionality of the old age annuity provisions in the social security law. A decision is expected before the court's June recess. In a separate 5 to 4 ruling, the court upheld the Georgia insurrection law of 1866 as applied to Angela Herndon, a young black communist organizer sentenced to eight to twenty years.
The Washington Knights of Columbus council announces its annual Frolic at the K C hall on Wednesday evening April 28. The notice lists a big bingo stand 15 major prizes and a $2.50 door prize. Everyone is welcome and a good time is assured.

Mrs Etta Lincoln Roberts 72 widow of William Roberts died at 619 South Avenue C after long illness. Born July 5 1864 in Keokuk County Iowa she taught in rural Keokuk and Martinsboro schools. Funeral Tuesday 2 30 pm at Jones Funeral Home with burial Elm Grove Cemetery. She is survived by daughter Mrs Vernal Moberly Cincinnati two grandchildren and one great grandson.
William Agg on and Lenora Alin both of Wellman obtain a marriage license Saturday. Arnold Glenn Taikovsky and Dora Helfrich, both of Riverside, obtained a license today.
Mrs. Ross Davis, formerly of Washington and tied to the Washington State bank through her husband, was struck by an automobile on a wet Lakewood street. She suffers a broken leg and broken arm and is hospitalized in Lakewood.
In Des Moines on April 26 the Iowa House passed a 15 member commission plan to coordinate with other states on uniform laws. The measure, 64 to 34, adds five representatives, five senators, the state comptroller, the attorney general, the planning board chair and two governor appointees to study interstate cooperation for a report next session.
