Board rejects extension of Brighton bus route
The Board of Education rejected a proposal to extend Brighton Elementary boundaries and bus routes to boost enrollment. Superintendent Schlapkohl called the plan not feasible and opposed by administration and local patrons. The unanimous defeat came as the board also cut a fourth grade section at Stewart Elementary due to declining enrollment and moved several staff.

County plans share of landfill study cost
The Washington County Regional Service Agency apportioned the county and local units share of a four county landfill site search cost. The executive board approved the per capita cost of just over 20 cents per person for the county and cities towns and county government. Stanley Consultants of Muscatine estimated the four county site survey at 11500 dollars.

Calf killing crash on county road near Rex Smith corner
Arnold Dean Tucker of Washington escaped injury when his car struck and killed two beef calves on a Jackson Township gravel road about 5 miles north of Rex Smith corner. The cattle owned by Alvin Horak were on a bridge. Tucker’s car ended in a ditch after traveling 100 feet. Vehicle damage was $1500 and cattle loss $340. The accident occurred about 11 p.m.

Invisible tie tack scam reported in Iowa ad
A Des Moines man complained to the Iowa Attorney General that he paid 1.50 for an invisible tie tack and received only two paper clips and instructions. Assistant AG Julian Garrett noted no clear fraud evidence, as the materials claim the method to attach clips so they do not show.
