The music department presents its annual Spring concert at 7 30 p m Monday in the junior high gym admission is free The program includes 7th 8th and 9th grade choruses along with Band B and Band A vocal director Mrs Dean Stanley instrumental director Gary McCurdy.
State Sen George Milligan Republican candidate for US Senate will be in Washington on Sunday evening April 28. A public reception in his honor is planned from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Captain's Table inviting attendees.
Fort Madison voters approved two bonds totaling 450000 for a vocational building and consolidating portable classrooms. A 400000 bond to build the new vocational facility and remodel the industrial arts area passed 63 percent. An additional 50000 from the school house fund to move portable classrooms passed 67 percent.
The Iowa Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 to sustain a Woodbury County District Court decision, upholding a statute that allows only licensed barbers to cut men's hair. Justice Mason wrote that differing approaches to cutting hair for men and women and distinct training justify the constitutional prohibition on cosmetologists trimming men’s locks.
Hollywood report says William Bud Abbott, longtime straight man to Lou Costello, died at 7 a.m. PDT at age 75 from cancer. He had suffered strokes and outlived his peak fame, ending life on Social Security after tax actions stripped his savings. Costello died in 1959.
The House Judiciary Committee paused impeachment business to consider a long delayed claim for Marcos Rojas Rodriguez. At age 13 he lost a thumb and two fingers in a 1925 bomb fuse accident near San Antonio. An Army board offered $900 in damages, later bills sought up to $15,000. The committee quickly reviewed the case in about ten minutes.
President Nixon asks Congress for a 5.1 billion foreign aid program for the coming year. Egypt gets 250 million to clear the Suez Canal repair damages and restore trade. Israel would receive 50 million in security aid and 300 million in military credit sales. Funds also target Jordan and other Mideast needs plus a 100 million special requirements fund.
The Iowa Senate approved a compromise 3 million appropriation to the Iowa State University Energy and Mineral Research Institute for coal research. The vote was 33 to 17 after rejecting the original 5.5 million plan to fund an experimental coal mine and land purchases.

The project costing about 68000 dollars covers asphalt overlays on several streets and should finish in about 10 days. West Main will be done first, followed by Fifth Street and South Marion, then Clara Barton.
