Snowfall of about two inches surprised Washington residents on Sunday afternoon. The brisk snow blanketed blossoming shrubs and flowers while the night temperature dropped to 25 degrees, echoing a similar low of 23 degrees noted in 1944 on this date.
Police seized narcotics worth thousands and cash during the arrest of three Minnesota suspects linked to a Clark Drug Store burglary in Council Bluffs. Leo Lallier and David Culp, both 26, face two counts of breaking and entering and narcotics possession. Nancy Powers, 21, also faces narcotics possession. Culp also charged with burglary tools. a fourth suspect escaped. Authorities found narcotics in two Minnesota-plate cars and a nearby motel. William Boortz identified some narcotics as from his firm. The trio were to be arraigned today.
In Lome a member of the presidential guard fired a rifle at President J Col Eyadema but the leader escaped with a slight wound. The assailant, from the elite gendarmerie platoon, was arrested. Eyadema had just proclaimed himself president after seizing power in January and dissolved the National Rebirth committee.
Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov was killed when his Soyuz 1 capsule crashed on return after a parachute fault. The 40-year-old veteran, first fatal spaceflight incident for the Soviets, was part of a planned two-ship exchange mission. Tass announced his death after hours of silence.
President Johnson met West German Chancellor Kurt-Georg Kiesinger in Bonn for an 80 minute disarmament discussion amid heightened security over a new assassination threat. He also saw President Luebke and planned informal talks with De Gaulle and Wilson before leaving for Adenauer's funeral.
Iowa lawmakers prepare for a Tuesday Senate hearing on a bill to provide 4.5 million dollars in state aid for the 1966-67 school year to the new area school system. The plan would shift to current-year payments and may include the separation of junior colleges from vocational schools. Senator Eugene Hill argues for limiting area schools to vocational and two-year technical programs, while Senator Joseph Cassidy defends broader aims and opposes fixed limits. The debate could extend beyond Tuesday with amendments to broaden the bill’s title and scope.
Bob Riley, vice president of manufacturing for Advance Ross, said the Washington plant will shut during the week of April 24 through 28 due to a Chicago truck strike cutting supply deliveries. U.S. planes attacked two main MIG bases near Hanoi Hoa Lac and Kep in North Vietnam using fragmentation bombs. Officials said missions were successful and noted up to nine MIG21s at Hoa Lac and as many as 20 at Kep. The strikes marked the heaviest U.S. blow to North Vietnam’s air arm amid a broader operation along the coast and a ground sweep in the Tron Triangle near Saigon.
Pasadena Calif. UPI reports Americas robot on the moon Surveyor 3 turned its television camera toward the earth and stars as it endured a 355 degree drop in temperature during an eclipse. From the Sea of Storms the spacecraft waited in shadow from 2:40 a.m. PST to 5:10 a.m. PST and cooled to 155 degrees below zero before returning to sunlight.
United Press International reports a freeze warning in the northeast and extreme north tonight. Tuesday offers partial to full cloud cover with a chance of rain or snow in the north and showers in the south. Warmer readings expected in the southeast and extreme south. Highs Tuesday reach the 40s in the north and 50s in the south, with tonight’s lows 25 to 30 in the extreme north to upper 30s in the south. Wednesday outlook calls for clear to partly cloudy skies with little temperature change.
