A column from Omaha reports Sergt. Roger A. Gordon of Centerville Iowa received the Purple Heart for wounds received on December 7 1941 while serving with the Marine Corps on a warship. Capt. Harry J. Davis presented the medal in Omaha. Gordon had been with the marine recruiting staff since February 1 and was wounded when a bomb struck the casemates aboard the vessel.
Allied forces led by the British 1st and 8th armies and the American 2nd corps push the Axis back about seven miles in Tunisia. Eisenhower dispatches report a 110 mile front aerial offensive with 1500 sorties, American bombers dropping heavy ordnance as forces advance toward Mateur and Tunis area.
Five Council Bluffs high school girls allegedly took a car from a local service station without the owner's consent. Police say two of the girls were seriously injured in the Friday wreck.
Pvt. Vernon E. Eagle of Dubuque, a veteran of Dieppe and Bougat raids who lost a leg in Tunisia, was among six returned heroes honored at a banquet by the American Newspaper Publishers association in New York.
Winfield Consolidated School bought enough war stamps and bonds in a two day drive to purchase an army jeep and more. The drive totaled 1172.75 with over 600 raised by high school students. Second grader Clifford Royer won the prize rabbit after buying over 40 in stamps. The school plans one more sale next Tuesday to close the year.
Third Officer Elizabeth F. Adams of the WAAC Fort Des Moines will speak at the Henry county Federation of Women's Clubs meeting at the Winfield Methodist church next week. Adams is among the few Americans to win the Croix de Guerre in the war, having served as an ambulance driver when France and Belgium were invaded by the Nazis.

John Russell Van Osdel announces enlistment information for naval aviation. Ensign Loren L. Hickerson, St. Louis Aviation Cadet selection board, will interview 17 year old men in Burlington Iowa on Tuesday April 27 at 7 30 p m. at the Navy recruiting station to show films including Eagles of the Navy and Bat.
A Farms Bureau meeting led by J. W. Chandler discussed full use of available labor for farm work. Representatives from the U S Employment Service War Board and local officials outlined shortages during grain harvest and hay making and proposed solutions including cooperation, efficiency, and using high school students and city workers on farms.

Current occupants include O K Clapper Real Estate Richard Stewart attorney and Dr F Boller dentist. Living quarters were used by the late Mrs T T Keeley. A Washington county note shows a broken farm mower in mud and requests farmers to gather old equipment for a scrap drive on Tuesday April 27. The County Salvage committee says such items as corn binders, harrows, discs, plows, engines, separators and kettles are vital to the war effort and asks all to contribute.
President Roosevelt acting as Commander in Chief ordered all picketing of the Celanese Corp plant in Newark New Jersey to stop and all workers to return to work at once. He warned that if not obeyed by noon Sunday he would take steps to protect national war interests and company rights.
Senate Truman committee defended its 1942 shipping losses finding against Secretary Frank Knox. The panel said Axis submarines sunk about 1,000,000 tons monthly, exceeding combined U.S. and Britain new ship construction. Senator Mead insisted the aggregate figure is the most accurate to date despite acknowledged details.

A large crowd attended the Good Friday union service at the Baptist church yesterday afternoon. Rev. Alfred Trenerry presided as ministers from local churches led remarks on the last words of Christ, with Mrs. Charles McConnell providing music during the three hour service.
U S Navy reports five air attacks on Japan ese targets in the Solomons. Two strikes hit Munda where three grounded planes were set afire and anti aircraft guns silenced. All American planes returned. The Munda raids bring total attacks on that base to 111 since late November.
Springfield April 24 The United Mine Workers of America under contract with Illinois coal operators were notified by UMWA president Ray Edmundson that 23,690 union members will stop work at midnight April 30.
