Dr Clint E Harris, class of 1896, is elected president of the Grinnell college alumni association succeeding Frank F Clin dinin, class of 1911.
Waverly council considers placing City water softeners in private homes on a deposit basis. Homeowners would pay a $20 deposit with part of it refunded later.
Over 4000 wire coat hangers collected from Iowa City homes will be resold to dry cleaning shops. Proceeds finance travel and expenses for local high school musicians to the national regional music contest in Minneapolis Minnesota.
NASHUA Mr and Mrs Arthur Boerschel have three daughters in hospitals Mrs John Reise and Marie 19 at New Hampshire and Ethel 10 in an Iowa City hospital The father returned from taking Ethel to the hospital to find Marie needed an emergency operation for appendicitis.
Logan reports Bert Delozier 45 Woodbine painter died when a pickup driven by Delozier crashed into a ditch and overturned. George Boustead 61 Woodbine carpenter was injured with fractured ribs and head injuries. Boustead was thrown through the windshield after the truck overturned.
Newton area farmer Leiland Hunter, 33, serves a jail term on a check charge and faces another when released. He was moved to Skiff hospital with a back ailment from a tractor accident two years ago, compounding his troubles.
Waterloo fire chief Ray Tiller reported the fiscal year ending March 31 1939 saw the largest fire losses in over a decade totaling 118646 dollars. Eight people died from burns and 19 were injured including 11 firefighters. The largest loss was 80007 dollars on November 15 at the W T Grant store blaze.
Abraham P. Miller 90, a Wellman resident, died yesterday morning at his son Dr. Enos D. Miller’s home after three months in bed. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at the Wellman Methodist church with Rev. Paul Hann officiating. interment will follow in Wellman cemetery. He was born near Kalona in 1848, married Emma Miller in 1877, later widow after Emma’s death in 1921, and survived by two sons Rollie Miller and E. D. Miller, plus a daughter Mrs. William Turnipseed, all of Wellman or nearby, with one son Wesley Miller having died in infancy. He belonged to the Evening Journal’s Three Quarter Century club.
Donald Hines, Washington county representative, placed well in both oral and written rounds of the state spelling contest in Des Moines. He missed one word in writing "platitudinous" and exited in the oral on "antiquarian." Sheriff Krabill and Rep. Stewart toured him through the capitol, with a banquet for teachers and contestants that drew about 250. His mother and teacher accompanied him home late Saturday night.
Governor George A. Wilson will publish a report from Warden Glenn C. Haynes on the use of state prison convicts for outside labor. The move follows a senate committee finding convicts had immoral relations with 14 and 15 year old girls at the Soldiers and Sailors Orphans Home in Davenport.
Vatican circles forecast Archbishop John T. McNicholas of Cincinnati as successor to the late Patrick Cardinal Hayes of New York within two weeks.
Funeral services for Charles Sojka were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Jones funeral home. Rev. Carl W. Klein of St. Paul's Evangelical church led the service, with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Pallbearers were Harry Kosnar Lloyd Sojka Hubert Malichky Laurence Marek Arthur Hora and Harry Hotz.
Rev W J Stevens longtime pastor of the Foursquare Gospel church in Washington since 1933 is promoted to pastor of the Decatur church and named state superintendent for Illinois Foursquare churches. His Washington farewell is planned for Sunday and a new pastor will be chosen this week.
Des Moines reports the Iowa senate approved the conference committee report on the state budget bill by a 32 to 14 vote and sent it to the governor. The house approved a conference report 98 to 0 and 94 to 0 on the budget, with expenditures of 21,263,369 annually for the next biennium.
Marriage licenses were issued at the clerk of court’s office to Ray Sommers and Goldie J. Maxwell, both of Kalona, on Friday, and to Lloyd Derby and Ardith Times, both of Keota, on Saturday.
The Holy Trinity court No. 1653 of the Catholic Order of Foresters marked its twenty fifth anniversary with a Sunday silver jubilee at Casino hall in Richmond. Funeral services for Silas Caldwell who died Saturday at his home southeast of Washington will be held Tuesday at 3 30 p m in the Christian church. Rev Vernon Carter will conduct the service with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Arrangements are by Jones funeral home. Caldwell would have been 78 on May 22 after five weeks illness. The full obituary will be printed tomorrow per family request.
Des Moines April 24 Governor George A Wilson announced he signed thirty one bills over the weekend. The measures include a mandate for federal employees in Iowa to pay state income tax and tax on interest from federal securities. Other actions transfer the state securities department to the insurance commission and move the division handling installment sales of stock from the auditor's office. He also approved a bill barring counties from voting extra primary road bond issues until 1959 with exemptions for counties without such votes.

The National Bituminous Coal commission may invoke its power to fix maximum prices if a prolonged mine shutdown escalates fuel shortages. Chairman Percy Tetlow said action could come on short notice after May 1 if the Appalachian bituminous producers and the United Mine Workers remain deadlocked. About 70 percent of soft coal miners, some 330,000 workers in eight eastern states, have been idle since April 1. the union plans to halt work for another 125,000 miners nationwide starting May 4.
