Mrs. K Ruth Hanley files for divorce from Joe Hanley in Sioux City claiming desertion. They wed in November 1930. Hanley is serving a 15 year federal prison term for kidnapping a bank messenger.
Mrs. E. J. Curtis and her husband, a Clinton manufacturer, left Belleair Florida for Rochester Minnesota where she will undergo her fifteenth tumor operation. They departed their winter home late Thursday in transit to the medical proceeding.
Prince Frederik and Princess Ingrid of Denmark enjoyed luncheon at Iowa State College in Ames. The meal featured American fried chicken and corn sticks shaped like ears of corn, a hallmark of the Tall Corn state traditions.
NEW HAMPTON v. Z. Moore, superintendent of schools for 12 years, received a new two-year contract at $2,000 yearly. The shorter term replaces a past three-year deal due to unsettled US economic conditions and the wartime scare in Europe, according to board members.

Leo T. Mikesh of Ackley, 34, received a life term in the state penitentiary for a $53 bank robbery. A Clarksville Kesley branch heist on December 20, 1938, led to his arrest five hours later after police traced an old coupe used in the crime.

Waterloo report states Louis W. Witty, 69, former John Deere Tractor Co. executive, wills most of his estate to 65 orphanages hospitals and Catholic churches in several states. After gifting $1,000 to 19 relatives, the remaining funds are to be distributed to listed institutions with $16,000 each where permitted.
Mrs Orn Jennings 76 formerly Margaret Jane Reece died Thursday evening in Tulsa Oklahoma. Her body will return to Columbus Junction for funeral services likely Monday with burial at Columbus City Cemetery. Surviving are daughter Mrs Elmer Smith Mullen Idaho sister Mrs Rosa Poole Wells Minnesota and several grandchildren. Mr Jennings died Oct 1937.

London reports the British government plans to assume direct control of the British Broadcasting Company to use radio for government news and propaganda in the peace effort. Networks would be government sources with all bulletins supervised and talks vetted, while broadcasts would push recruiting and related appeals.
Representative Hamilton Fish Jr. declares the United States should avoid foreign wars and criticizes New Deal policy. He urges a national campaign to oppose war hysteria, forming a National Committee to Keep America out of Foreign Wars with 36 members.

Mason City police report a stolen vehicle case ending with a suspect, 27 year old Jesse MecCaun, in custody after seven minutes. He struck a parked car and collided with a police cruiser during the pursuit.

Davenport Iowa April 22 More than half of the 3275 employees of the Rock Island arsenal were ordered to undergo smallpox vaccinations. The precaution was taken by Col Norman F Ramsey arsenal commander when Lenore Anderson daughter of the arsenal golf club proprietor contracted the disease. Those not affected by the order had been vaccinated two years ago.
Entertainment committee for the state Sunday school convention seeks lodging for 116 more delegates during the three day event next Wednesday to Friday. So far 284 places are secured from churches and homes, with 400 expected. Contacts include church leaders and Mrs. Stev ens.
In Burlington a southeastern Iowa music festival featured a high school orchestra and violin quartet with critics from Henry Sopkin of Chicago. A 225 to 250 member combined orchestra and a 350 voice combined chorus led by Max Krone drew attention amid roughly 1,000 attendees from ten schools.
In Ottumwa Iowa a kerosene explosion sparked a deadly fire that killed Charles Helm ichm 41 and his five children Lola Leota Donald Helen and Darrell. Three other children suffered burns as two more adults escaped injured and two younger siblings were unable to flee.
A federal jury ordered Halsey, Stuart & Co. to pay Equitable Life Insurance Co. of Town $66,150 for misrepresentation and concealment in a 1930 purchase of Longview, Washington improvement bonds, while Equitable sought $243,000. The case centers on the bond deal and alleged fraud.
