Washington Seeks Night Ready Athletic Field Upgrade

Washington high school authorities lease the D F Macon five acre tract on East Van Buren with a five year term and option to purchase. The new field aims to be larger near level with drainage and electric lights for night games, improving facilities versus Burlington Muscatine Ottumwa and nearby colleges.

Washington high school and junior college graduation set

Washington high school and junior college will hold joint commencement on Wednesday May 27 with 92 high school graduates and 17 junior college graduates. Iowa State Teachers College President Latham will give the address and baccalaureate services occur May 24 in the Methodist church.

County Pastors to Meet Next Tuesday

The Ministerial association of Washington county and environs will meet Tuesday forenoon at the Y M C A. Session opens at ten with worship by Rev. Charles K. Coggeshall of Kalona. Rev. a Il. Krenmyre of Ainsworth will present a paper on Jesus the Son of Man. Rev. F. J. Robins of West Chester will lead the general discussion. Vice-president H. W. Gordon presides. Luncheon will follow.

Announcement by Iowa Southern Utilities reveals Phil Crail will become manager of public relations based in Columbus Junction. Alleged Forger Held Over for Grand Jury

Washington business men failed to identify a woman held as Ivo B. Wolfkill, said to be from Des Moines, who passed two worthless checks in Fairfield last Saturday. Similar forgeries were reported in Mt. Pleasant and a third town the same day. She was bound over to the grand jury with a $1,500 bond.

State Inspector Conducts School Visit in Washington

Miss Clara Wallace, state inspector of normal training schools, inspected Washington schools yesterday. She praised the junior college, high school, and grade schools but found building conditions at the junior high substandard. Crowded classes and lack of modern physical welfare facilities hinder teachers. The board aims to correct the situation soon. Wallace is part of the state superintendent of public instruction staff and formerly county superintendent.

Youth Dies After Baseman Lethal Play Incident

In St Louis on April 23 Robert Taylor Jr a 13 year old high school player died four hours after being hit in the head by a throw while sliding into second base during a practice game. The tragedy follows the accident during a routine drill.

Paving to Begin Soon on Primary Road 161 in Iowa

Concrete pouring on primary road No. 161 between Ainsworth and Iowa City will start in about a week. McCarthy Improvement Company of Davenport handles from Low Junction east of Riverside, with Central Engineering Company to move in from Davenport to Haskins. Two firms will work sections toward Riverside and toward Ainsworth, accelerating completion. A new overhead bridge on No. 161 near Ainsworth is under construction.

Rains Delay Laying of Pipe Across County

Heavy rains and cold weather halt pipe line work across this county this week. Mud slows hauling, ditching, and laying operations. Crews stay centered near the Iowa River east of Gladwin but expect to move toward Huskina and Washington if conditions improve.

Bridge and road work progress on county routes

The old bridge will stay open until the new bridge is completed in July. Culverts are being poured on route 81 between West Chester and Welliam, with grading expected to begin by May first.

Bank Robberies Scatter Across Iowa and Missouri

A Burr Oak Iowa savings bank was robbed of about $1000 after two men forced five people into a vault and escaped in a Wisconsin-plate car toward Minnesota. Similar Iowa raids followed in Moville Steamboat Rock Alden, with two Missouri cases near Hawk Point and Belton.

United Press dispatches from Tegucigalpa report rebels under Pedro Ordon attempting an invasion from El Salvador were captured and interned by Salvadoran troops. Government states the situation improving with no fighting and a decisive clash at Chamelecon yesterday.

Funeral of Judge Wade Held Today in Iowa City

Dignitaries gathered as Federal Judge Martin J. Wade received last rites in Iowa City. Wade died in Los Angeles last week, and Bishop H. S. Rohlman presided at the pontifical mass of requiem with Monsignor William P. Shannahan delivering the funeral sermon.

Baker Funeral to Be Saturday in Wellman

WELLMAN April 23 Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church Saturday afternoon at two for Mrs. Theodore Q. Baker who died yesterday after an illness of about ten days. Born April 16 1845 in Lancaster county Pa she married Theodore Q. Baker March 30 1869. They lived on a farm north of Wellman then moved to town. Surviving are two daughters Mrs Emma Trieschmann and Mrs Lewis Groff both of Wellman eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A brother Sam Shrader of Cedar Rapids and two brothers and one sister are deceased. Also noted Sam J Swartzendruber of north of Wellman died this afternoon from blood poisoning. He leaves a wife and six children. Willard Thurman of near Wellman leaves for Anstadh sanitarium Colfax for rheumatism treatment. Cordelle Braden Wellman Journal correspondent broke her left leg last night in Mercy hospital Iowa City reported to be progressing well.
