Washington YMCA Annual Meeting Tickets On Sale

Tickets are on sale for the Washington YMCA annual meeting set for Tuesday May 10 in the community room. A 6:30 p.m. dinner precedes programs by the junior high jazz band awards and a speech by Dick Kautz of Muscatine, president of NAM. Tickets cost 4 dollars and are available at the YMCA office or from board members.

Mushrooms Reported By Larry Thrapp Near Wellman

Larry Thrapp of Wellman reports good mushroom hunting south of the Skunk River. He found 48 mushrooms there Sunday and 120 Thursday, noting they are fairly large for this time of year.

Storm Lake woman admits abduction hoax ends search

A two state search for an alleged kidnapper ended when Buena Vista County deputies learned Storm Lake resident Patricia Van Eck 24 had fabricated the abduction story. After failing a polygraph, she said the tale was false and she had not been forced to Randolph Nebraska by a hitchhiker.

Des Moines officer shot during confrontation in police struggle

Des Moines patrolman Brian Melton, 25, was killed after a gunfight with suspect David L. Welton, 22, who was charged with murder. Welton faced arraignment in Polk County District Court and is held on a $500,000 bond with a May 13 preliminary hearing planned. Melton died after being rushed to a local hospital.

Local man arrested in theft of vehicle

Washington County Public Safety Center officials say Joe A. Williams of Washington will be returned from Fairfield to face a larceny of a motor vehicle charge filed in Crawfordsville after a truck theft Thursday night. Williams, on parole from Anamosa Men’s Reformatory for breaking and entering, is suspected in a related Crawfordsville break-in at Prescription Feeds Inc. Police seek a possible link to Ted J. TeBockhorst, held in Muscatine on stolen property and drug charges, who may be connected to the case.

Iowa nursing home owner charged with defrauding state funds

Stanley G. Boyle, owner of Boyle Corp., was arraigned in Woodbury County District Court on a charge of fraudulently obtaining two thousand four hundred dollars in state funds tied to a nursing home operated in Rock Rapids. He received until May 9 to enter a plea. The company runs seven Iowa nursing homes.
