Bernadines Grow, 2, daughter of Mr and Mrs Virgil Grow of Marathon, was in fair condition at Lutheran hospital Tuesday after her right hand was caught in a storm machine. Amputation of four fingers was necessary.
Waterloo police solved a string of burglaries after a truck dumped 37 000 cigarettes and two homes and a filling station were broken into. Four boys aged 12 to 14 confessed to the thefts.
Porter, 32, a service station operator, was charged with receiving stolen goods after allegedly handling tires and parts stripped from several autos. He pled not guilty and was held to the grand jury. Francis Criminmins, 23, and Neal Lowery, 21, are held on grand larceny charges in tire thefts and identified Porter as the recipient of stolen tires. Police Chief Everett Maricie commented.
Otis T Neweaard, longtime Hubbard postmaster, received a 158 month sentence at Sandstone Minnesota federal prison after pleading guilty to misappropriating post office funds and making false entries. He admitted staging a fake holdup of the Hubbard post office on January 2 to hide a cash shortage.
Bioux City report: Frank H Pierson of Fairfield elected president of the Iowa Master Plumbers Association at the closing session of the annual convention. He succeeds Harry Bruns of Sioux City. Roy P Kerker of Davenport named vice president, Roy Jenkins of Oskaloosa secretary, and George J Palmer of Ames treasurer. George C Purffett of Ames is the only new director.
Des Moines reports a new program by the state board of vocational education to place disabled persons in war industries. Willis W. Graf, director of rehabilitation, says they will form a registry of the disabled. Letters inviting registration will be distributed by draft boards. Registration will be voluntary.
Emil W. Green, 54, a Santa Fe railroad switchman, was killed when he fell beneath cars during switching in the Santa Fe yards at Fort Madison. Engine foreman Karl O'Dell was thrown from the cars but escaped with injuries not believed serious.
James F. Farrington of Haskins died today in University hospital Iowa City. The body will be brought to L A Jones funeral home for funeral plans. Mrs Farrington died March 31 of this year. He is survived by two sons and two daughters.
Second Lieutenant Frank B. Bragg of Savannah Georgia was killed in an army plane crash at Fort Bragg North Carolina. Major L A Walsh of Brooklyn New York and Lieutenant Barton J Hewitt of O Clare Wisconsin were seriously injured.
The DeMolay spring conclave convenes Friday at the Washington Masonic Temple with seven southeastern district chapters attending. District officers and committees from Davenport, Fairfield, Muscatine, Burlington, Keokuk, Town City and Clinton will participate, with a morning session, golf tournament, banquet, and dance planned at the temple and Country club.
Washington April 22. The radio industry which last year did a 240 million dollar business enters the final stretch of civilian receiving set production with a WPB deadline midnight tonight. After midnight none of the 55 manufacturers may start producing home radios for civilians.
Sheriff Harold M. Putnam urged unity in fighting the axis powers telling the Y's Men last evening that differences must be forgotten and the nation must win the war. He compared World War I to World War II, recounted experiences in France, and credited Americans with aiding the effort despite French and British sacrifices. David K. Brown, Iowa gubernatorial candidate, attended as a guest and spoke briefly.
Occupational survey forms for the third registration dated February 16 were mailed to 1094 men. Forms are being checked and processed in the county board office. Some responses go to the state employment service, others to the state selective service office. A fourth registration for men aged 45 to 60 is set for April 27 in county towns.
A car driven east on West Second Street by Earl Redlinger and a car going north on North Avenue were in a collision at their intersection this fore noon. No injuries were reported, but both vehicles sustained about $200 in damage. Milk being hauled in one of the cars spilled onto the pavement.
Audiences packed the high school auditorium to hear the Washington schools bands under Maurice Brayton. The junior band, from grades and junior high, impressed with rapid progress, followed by a strong high school band performing difficult selections. The program closed with patriotic anthems led by Boyd White.
Word of the death comes from Salt Lake City where Mrs. Eliza A. Beard aged nearly 90 had lived with her son Cloyce Beard, connected with a Detroit firm building a federal ordnance plant. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Sherman's funeral home followed by burial in Woodlawn cemetery. The Rev. George Kerr of the United Presbyterian church will lead services. Mrs. Beard had been a longtime Washington resident, last living on South Marion Avenue.
The Office of Price Administration outlined sugar allotment periods from May 5 to May 16 for Stamp No 1 and subsequent stamps through June 27. Restaurants face halved sugar use from last year or March, while industrial sugar users receive 70 percent of prior allotments. Individuals must register May 4 to 7 at elementary schools, with industrial users registering April 28 and 29 at high schools. One adult per household may obtain books for family use.
All Washington county posts except Crawfordsville attended the Riverside meeting with 67 members present. Emil Hesselschwerdt spoke on community service. L. J. Kehoe chairs the navy relief drive seeking a $1,100 county quota. A June Wellman joint meeting with the Auxiliary is planned.
In West Chester district court the Floyd Grecian suit against the mayor and town council was moved from Thursday to Friday morning. Judge Frank Bechly overruled the defendants motions after arguments by attorneys Richard A. Stewart and L. J. Kehoe.
Cedar Rapids Denton R. Steffer of the former Marak Steffer Implement Co. of Tipton and Harry Finck of Marion, a former vice president, admitted in federal court Tuesday they withheld assets from the bankruptcy estate trustee. Steffer was fined 100 dollars and Finck 159 dollars.
Supt E A Ralston Principal W A Erbe and Miss Ethel McCreedy list 14 junior college 96 high school and 82 junior high students as graduation candidates subject to completion of required work. Commencement for college and high school set for May 28 at Case Field with Lt Roy L Smith speaker. Baccalaureate on May 24 at the Methodist church by Rev George Kerr. Junior senior banquet on May 21 at the same church.

United Press reports early today a two hour British commando raid on the French coast driving back German troops and penetrating coastal defenses while offshore ships bombed two armed trawlers. The action follows signals of a planned second front as Allied leaders press for closer Soviet cooperation and potential American participation this summer.
