Rep Huston forecasts approval of a labor bill as the four powers fail to reach immediate accord on an Austrian peace treaty. The big four held a two hour secret session on three core issues and pledged to return to the talks. Molotov opened the formal session with compromises on lesser clauses as a renewed effort to finish the treaty before adjournment.
Gov. Robert Blue signed a pay increase bill for county officials giving about 27 percent raises. He also approved funds to reimburse local tax exemptions in 1948 and 1949 from liquor revenue, and an annual $7,254,660 for primary road maintenance. Three bills were vetoed including one on welfare tax suspension.
Norman F. Schoonover, a junior, joined seven pharmacy students initiated into the Delta chapter of Rio Chi at the University of Iowa. The group attended a dinner at the Iowa Union after the ceremony.
Mrs J J Vieig aged 64 died this morning at 12 30 at her Rubio home after a long illness She had been an invalid for ten years Funeral services are planned at Hopewell church southwest of Rubio with Rev Gerald Dillon and burial in Richland cemetery She is survived by husband J J Fleig son Wilford of Columbus Ohio grandson Jimmy Fleig a sister Mrs Altha Bailey of Webster City parents and a brother are deceased

The House Appropriations Committee trimmed the Interior Department budget by about 4 percent, approving 3,649,313 for fiscal 1948. Excluding mandatory funds, the cut is near 50 percent, with the Reclamation Bureau set at 62,717,600 of 145,952,260 proposed. It marks the committee’s largest percentage cut among the major appropriations bills so far.
Washington April 21 The Republican led Congress moves toward passage of a personal income tax cut as President Truman’s opposition softens after reports of improving government finances. Senate Finance Committee to begin hearings with Secretary Snyder first witness, aiming to adopt a house style measure. Democratic leaders signal possible passage with modifications to the plan. The substitute would cut income by about 38.8 billion but not take effect until January 1.
Keota resident Donald L. Holmes was jailed after a minor auto wreck near West Chester. He waived a preliminary hearing before Justice Boveeth and was bound over on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated with a $500 bail set. Deputy Walt Kiesey arrested him after he left the scene and crossed the west county line.
Four more violators of city traffic rules were arrested yesterday and fined in police court today. George Doran and William Crandall paid five dollars each for sidewalk driving. Richard Moothart was fined 12.50 for speeding and running stop signs. Marcus Miller paid 7.50 for a traffic violation and Stanley Wallace paid the same for tampering with a motor vehicle.
Two divorce petitions were filed with R. R. Noonan, district court clerk, on Saturday. Naomi B. Bailey sues Virgil C. Bailey, married Davenport March 30, 1944, separated April 6, 1947, with no children and a property settlement sought. Josephine Agnus Scheffel sues Alfred Garland Scheffel, married Chicago May 16, 1936, separated June 1946, custody of three minor children sought.
Evelyn Olson begins work this week as staff nurse for Washington County Health Unit covering the northwest third of the county where no nurse has served since December 1. She is Mercy Hospital Marshalltown graduate, Minnesota Public Health Course alumna, previously with Visiting Nurses Association and Army Nurse Corps for four years.
Joseph A. Beirne NFTW president rejects Drew Pearson claim that John L. Lewis masterminded the telephone strike. Beirne says the mine union and AFL CIO have no role beyond non strings attached assistance and demands equal radio time from ABC to counter Pearson remarks.
Funeral services were conducted for David Wayne Knupp 43 who died after falling from a car onto highway 2 in Louisa County. Survivors include his sister Sara Marie and grandparents Don Darbyshire and Cloyd Knapp. Services were at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Fred Miller and Rev. Merte Booth. Burial in Elm Grove.
Detroit April 21 UP strikers clashed with police on main Michigan Bell picket lines. Twenty-one strikers including two top union leaders were arrested and taken to police headquarters. three women among those caged. A company spokesman labeled weekend events intimidation and violence against non striking Bell workers. one assault required medical care. Police said no charges yet against arrestees Walter Schaar and Bernie Hawkins.
Marshalltown Iowa April 21 Funeral services were planned here today for Comfort H Van Law 77 former Iowa senator who died yesterday He was dean of Marshalltown attorneys served in the Iowa senate 1909 to 1915 Iowa University graduate with a 1897 master’s degree member of the Iowa State bar association the Masons and active in Republican ranks He is survived by a daughter and a son.
Representative T. H. Huston predicts the Iowa House will pass the closed shop bill by up to 80 percent, while union delegates flood the State House to press their case. Huston says the labor visit may backfire byIncreasing opposition among wavering legislators as amendments delay voting.
Governor Robert D. Blue addressed a crowded capitol grounds gathering of up to 22,900 Iowa union members. He said the state government is not hostile to labor and urged listeners to respect legislators who are acting in the public interest amid debate on a proposed closed shop ban and pending workmen’s compensation bills.
