Des Moines column notes Lloyd B Cunningham Iowa state fair board secretary estimates at least 65 county fairs this year with dates set for 29. The count reflects an expanding fair season across counties as organizers plan events.
Thomas B. Dawson of Hills faced district court in Muscatine where he was fined 500 dollars, his car confiscated, and ten cases of Illinois whisky seized. He was arrested April 3 after state patrol officers pursued him at speeds reaching eighty miles per hour.
A $10,000 slander suit was settled Tuesday in Newton district court for $200 plus court costs after testimony from three witnesses for the plaintiff Carl Milligan Maxwell Carpenter. Milligan sued Ed Signs a Baxter area farmer alleging slanderous statements and a false accusation of tire theft from Signs farm garage last May. The all woman Jasper county jury hearing the case was dismissed. The theft case was resolved last October when Leroy Cook of Rhodes pleaded guilty and received a 10 year sentence.
Eight year old Carl Lagerquist son of Mr and Mrs H R Lagerquist died after his grass fire trap near the Cedar Rapids ball park. He wore a new Indian suit and ran for help when his trouser leg caught fire. He rolled to extinguish flames but the fire grew. His body was found in burning brush near small timber and taken to Beatty mortuary.
Two girls aged 17 and 13 and a 15 year old boy from New Virginia Iowa admitted the misdeed in juvenile court before Judge Norman R. Hays on malicious mischief charges for painting yellow on Ben Glecklers car. The court ordered the trio and their parents to cover paint removal costs about 30 dollars plus case costs and warned that further offences would not be treated leniently.
U.S. airmen in the Aleutians set a record by striking Kiska fifteen times in one day and continued the air offensive in the Solomons by blasting a freighter and three Japanese bases. A navy communique says the latest Kiska attacks hit the main camp area and the runway.
Master Sergeant Fred Minden told Leon Beatty post members at city hall about Guadalcanal fighting. He recounted fierce Japanese assaults at Henderson Field, their willingness to die rather than surrender, and noted air attacks and naval shelling.
St Pauls Evangelical and Reformed churches in Washington and Valley announce installation services for Rev Milo J Phillips as pastor on Sunday May 2 at ten oclock in the Washington church. Rev Milo Filipi of Cedar Rapids will be the installing minister. A potluck dinner follows in the social rooms.
Fire department responded to a brush burning incident in the garden of the Van Auken home near Beggs in the northeast part of town. The blaze threatened a nearby garage but caused no damage as the building did not ignite and the fire was controlled.
Washington county farmers project a rise in crop acreage led by corn and soybeans. The AAA survey shows total farm land at 336,364 acres with 222,303 acres in crops, and 21,518 acres of soybeans versus 20,443 last year.
Four Washington men joined scrap drive meetings in neighboring communities last night showing strong enthusiasm and organization for the April 27 drive. Glenn Holden reported 15 at the Iowa block meeting and 26 at Highland. C. R. Wilson said 9 at Cedar. A. E. Atchison 3 at Seventy-six. Ralph Martin 6 at Marion.

Ivan Norton has been elected to the board of governors of the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers. Three Iowa appointees join F. E. Triggs of the Ankeny ordnance plant and R. J. Smith, an instructor, on the board.
Mayors of Ainsworth Crawfordsville Riverside Wellman Brighton Kalona Washington and West Chester unite to designate April 27 1943 as County Scrap Collection Day urging all citizens to pause other business and donate service to support the war effort for boys in service.
On April 27 1943 the court house and all county offices will be closed so county employees can participate in the county wide scrap collection drive.
Keota April 21 William Dunning 51 a longtime Keota resident took his own life by shooting himself in the head with a 22 rifle. His wife found him in the garage this morning a coroner ruled death by own action no inquest. He served as a chief gunner's mate in World War I and later worked at the Iowa ordnance plant in Burlington. He and wife Nettie Irelan had two sons Clark tied to Burlington and Edward at home and in Keota schools. Funeral arrangements are handled by Marsh Funeral Home awaiting relatives arrival.
James Lawrence Gier aged 48 died suddenly of a heart attack at his 1103 East Harrison street home yesterday afternoon. Funeral services will be held at L. A. Jones funeral home today at eleven, with burial in Woodlawn cemetery. He was born May 16, 1894 in Kansas and lived in Washington since 1929. He served in WWI and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He leaves his wife Hulda and two children Mary Louise and Howard Eugene, plus five brothers and one sister.
President Roosevelt and President Manuel Avila Camacho of Mexico crossed into the United States for a meeting to strengthen Americas unity after their Monterey conference. They would meet formally today as Camacho continues his visit, after touring Monterey with Roosevelt and sharing a joint radio broadcast.
British 8th Army renewed pressure near Enfidaville in Tunisia blasting Afrika Korps positions. Rommel led counter-attacks as Allied air forces claimed 151 enemy planes down in three days. Royal Air Force carried out first triple threat night raids on Berlin Stettin and Rostock. Soviet forces seized a strategic height on the Moscow frontier while breaking counterattacks around Kuban bridgehead in the Caucasus.
Chairman Roger Sherman of the county Red Cross chapter announced two gifts that push the county war fund toward 16 000 dollars. An additional 25 came from Ainsworth and 69 40 from the Center school district in Lime Creek township. The total may rise above the county quota of 15 000 as more contributions arrive.
