President Roosevelt signed the Bankhead cotton control bill, limiting this year’s crop to ten million bales with a 50 percent tax on production above quotas set by the AAA. Supporters say it meets demand from cotton men while critics warn of national collectivism.
A. G. Richardson has been appointed acting postmaster of Keota to succeed the late J. G. Ranous. The change was confirmed by telegram from the Washington postmaster general. Richardson, previously a post office clerk, is aided temporarily by former deputy Martha Smock and is a brother of the Keota Eagle publishers.
Fire destroyed the Seaton hotel in Spencer Iowa during the night forcing 20 guests and the proprietor to flee in scanty attire. The blaze began in the furnace room in the basement. Most goods were removed. Proprietor J A Seaton was slightly injured. Damage pegged at about 7000 dollars.
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Waldschmidt were surprised by relatives and friends at Riverside to mark their 21st anniversary. The event featured card games and visits. Mrs. Waldschmidt is the former Alice O Brien of Stuart Iowa, where they wed 21 years ago.
At Washington county meeting in Des Moines area supporters organized a Colflesh for Governor club. Fred Bourgeois was elected chairman and Alva Kepler secretary. a ten member county board will be chosen. Discussions covered bringing Colflesh to the county and whether to focus county work or his personal appearances elsewhere.
Weather outlook predicts clear skies for the weekend in Iowa with no rain expected. Warm temperatures and fog tonight are noted with frost in some areas from last night and a low temperature forecast.
The fire department answered two alarms with little damage. Early this morning a still alarm at the Linas Wood residence on East Washington Street reported a chimney fire. Around noon firefighters used a chemical extinguisher to douse a small roof fire at 211 East Second Street.
The Iowa State Board of Education invited Dr. George Zook, director of the U S Bureau of Education, to become president of the State University of Iowa. President George P. Baker said Zook is considering the offer and a reply is expected in a few days. Dr. Zook, from Ft. Scott Kansas, has led the federal education bureau since 1920. Dr. Walter A. Jessup, university president, has resigned effective May 1.
The city awarded the annual garbage contract to EK. J. Kolosick at 62.50 dollars per month. Waste collection from Washington homes and businesses will start around early May and run through early October. Kolosick brings several years of experience to the job.
Virgil Lekin chief clerk of the house of representatives at Des Moines will speak at the Washington County Democrat Club meeting Tuesday evening at 7 30 at the courthouse. The session will include business matters and plans to organize a Young Democratic club and recruit candidates for county offices at the upcoming primary.
Vern Haig a Princeton graduate and candidate for the Republican gubernatorial nomination withdraws from the race and announces an independent bid for governor in the general election. He plans a fall campaign built on merging the University of Iowa with Iowa State College and moving state capital headquarters from Des Moines to an unnamed city, with Ames as a medical and dental college site. The Republican field remains Dan W Turner Robert W Calflesh Clarence A Knutson and Wallace M Short.
The Burlington chamber reports 109 members and 1520 dollars raised toward a 2000 dollar annual budget. A monthly meeting schedule is set, and committees on Tract, Roads, City Beautiful, Industrial, Membership, and Program are named plus a new doctor member. Memorial Day proposal favors afternoon services to boost business participation. Charles W Bond delivers the keynote on group activity and community cooperation.
In Eldora on Friday evening Meredith Balcoff 17 won first place in the humorous division of the state declamatory contest reading Ladies Aid at the Local Theater. She is the daughter of Rev T M Balcoff and Mrs Balcoff of Columbus Junction and a Columbus High senior active in drama and music.
In Lexington Massachusetts citizens march toward Washington to protest government involvement in business. Secretary Perkins reports 2,760,000 employed in the past year with March employment at 80 percent of the 1928-25 peak. weekly payrolls rose by 70 million dollars in 12 months.
Washington hosts the Ke-Wash conference track and field meet with six member schools Kalona Wellman West Chester Brighton Keota and Richland. Preliminaries begin at one o clock with finals at three. Events include sprints hurdles distance races and field events with two entrants per event and four man relays. Admission is ten cents for children and twenty cents for adults.
Funeral services for Martin Little of Washington will be held at two o clock Sunday at L A Jones funeral home with Rev A A Wing presiding. Burial will follow in Elm Grove cemetery. Little died in a Muscatine hospital from injuries after a Tuesday train fall. he was a four year Navy veteran who served on the New Mexico Houston Beaver and Melville and traveled the Americas, Hawaii, the Philippines and the Orient.
Mr Bond urged citizens to share benefits through cooperation and proper leadership. He warned against overburdening a single figure, proposed focused Chamber of Commerce programs, and stressed improving transportation, Mississippi River development, and airport construction.
The Rockefeller foundation pledged 32000 dollars to complete the University of Iowa theater, announced today by President Walter A. Jessup. The donation supports construction efforts at the Iowa City campus theater project.
Railway labor leaders in Washington refuse to accept Roosevelt's proposal for workers to stay under a ten percent wage cut for six months. Federal coordinator Joseph Eastman said unions need further instructions from workers before a final decision. The president announced a cabinet committee would study the railway situation.
Dr Rexford Tugwell assistant secretary of agriculture is due to address the American Society of Newspaper Editors tonight. He is expected to expound his administration philosophy and respond to editor questions on current farm policy and reform.
Glen Genkinger admitted guilt this afternoon on embezzlement and larceny charges and received concurrent sentences. Embezzlement carries up to five years with suspended term to Sheriff R H McCarty. larceny nets three months in county jail with no suspension. He was returned from Evanston Illinois to face indictments for thefts from Bright on creamery and from Harry Wentworth of Brighton. Judge Patterson set May 7 for trial on two cases Bankers Life versus Phillips and MOrtleon versus Morrie ton.
Bettie Payne reports a junior high geography lesson where Richard Owen shared memories of a war and Egypt. He claimed not to have been born during the war and joked about pyramids, noting his father and brother once climbed to the top. The class enjoyed the session and hopes for more Egypt talk.
