The Mini Bus will operate several special trips in the coming weeks. On Friday April 22 it travels to Muscatine and Davenport. On Tuesday April 26 it goes to What Cheer for the Russ Morgan Orchestra performance. It then heads to Cedar Rapids for the Sweet Adeline show on Friday May 6. Reservations at 653-2853.
The Optimists held their annual election Tuesday morning at Winga's Restaurant. Wilbert Graber was named president with Doyle Brown and Willard Widmer as vice presidents. Board members elected were Dale Venzke, Myron Graber, Carroll Kenney and Art Boshart. Myron Shields remains secretary treasurer. Officers to take office in October. Planning meeting for the Chicken Barbeque set for Tuesday May 3 at 6:45 a.m. at Winga's Restaurant. wives invited.
DES MOINES UPI a Wallace Farmer survey conducted in January found more than four out of five Iowa farmers doubt corn prices will drop below $2.20 per bushel at local elevators by summer. Two of three farmers expect soybean prices to fall under $7 per bushel in July amid weather optimism and stronger soybean values.
Shelby County Sheriff Orrell Gearhart noticed smoke in the second floor office around 8 p.m. and found a blaze in the basement area where records and papers were being destroyed by janitor Henry Kauffman.
Members of the Washington Chapter of Future Business Leaders of America plan to send delegates to the 31st Annual State Leadership Conference at the University of Northern Iowa April 22 and 23, then compete with 600 Iowa students for spots at the National Leadership Conference in Denver July 1 to 4. The event features chapter, team, and individual competitions including Best Local Chapter Activities Report, Most Outstanding Project, Money Management Project, and Best Local Chapter Exhibit. The Washington County Fair eliminates commercial gilt and purebred swine breeding classes to curb pseudorabies spread. County Extension Director Jim Frier cites state health regulations and recent local cases as justification. All hogs shown will be slaughtered, exhibitors must sign affidavits, a market gilt class is added, and judging days shift to reduce disease risk. 4-H and FFA swine members must enroll additional pigs for the State Fair. a spring meeting will explain rules and disease controls.
United Press International reports that Iowa voters defeated a school and municipal bond issue on Tuesday. In Adel DeSoto, for the third time in four years, residents rejected a bond intended to fund a replacement for the 63 year old high school.
Postmaster General Benjamin Bailar announced that the U S Postal Service can postpone a rate increase for at least a year due to a rare surplus. For the 12 months ending March the service reported a 5 million surplus and 45 5 million for the fiscal year starting last Oct 1, contrasting with a previous six month deficit. Bailar noted costs are controlled and expect a rate rise in spring 1978, but not forever due to inflation and wage provisions.
Washington reports President Carter's energy plan would raise gas prices via a rising federal tax, with a potential 50 cent per gallon increase over a decade. Senate and House leaders anticipate a fierce fight over new taxes, rebates, and shifts to coal, natural gas pricing, and efficiency incentives.
Iowa Supreme Court reversed a Story County ruling and ordered reexamination of false pretenses law in the cases against Frank R. West and Robert E. Lee of American Beef Packers. The executives faced indictments for obtaining cattle under false pretenses and conspiracy in purchases between December 24, 1974, and January 7, 1975, amid ABP bankruptcy. Justice Warren J. Rees wrote that the false pretenses statute and related precedents warrant fresh review of when charges apply.
Des Moines officials say it will be two months or more before a major tax equalization order is decided. Revenue director Gerald Bair questions Farm Bureau estimates of 50 percent farm and 25 percent residential valuation increases, noting data gathering is incomplete. Farm Bureau director Leo Waggoner cites county assessor hints of large uplifts and links valuation method to farm land prices and five year productivity averages amid fears of spiraling property taxes and inflated inflation affecting farmers and homeowners.

Washington reports the U S economy grew 5.2 percent in the first quarter, the strongest since 1976, boosted by higher consumer spending though inflation ran 5.8 percent. Real output lagged due to severe cold, with a $34.8 billion rise in consumer spending from the prior quarter.
