Hughes seeks major disaster declarations for Iowa floods
Gov Harold E Hughes asked President Johnson to declare 87 Iowa counties as major disaster areas while touring flood stricken Mississippi River cities. He estimated state damages at 50 to 80 million dollars, with 15 million already counted and 10 million private plus 5 million public utility losses. The flood affects Davenport Clinton Muscatine Dubuque and surrounding towns as crews reinforce dikes stockpile sandbags and evacuations continue.

Appeal in County Seeks IFYE Host Families in Washington County
Washington County Extension office invites applications from families willing to host IFYE delegates under the International Farm Youth Exchange. Iowa youths will host and be hosted by farm and town families from mid May to early November in two groups, with stays of 3 to 4 weeks. Hosts are asked to treat delegates as family members and participate in daily life. The program is funded yearly by local 4H clubs.

Cub Scouts Clean Riverside Road in Washinton
Cub Scouts of Den 6 in Wash ington conducted an anti litter campaign along about a mile of Riverside Washington road at the north edge of Washington. The boys from Stewart school walked to their Den Mother’s home carrying sacks they used to collect litter. Farm worker injured in tractor accident near Washington
Frank Eaves 32, formerly of Missouri and now a farm worker on the Lawrence Whisler farm four miles north of Washington on Riverside road, was seriously hurt this morning when a post struck him in the head while he pulled fence posts on a tractor. He was found about 11 45 a.m. by Lawrence Whisler and taken to Washington County Hospital in poor condition. He is married with three children.
