A public park site will receive a new feature announced by city officials. The project aims to enhance recreation space and community events, with construction set to begin this summer and expected to finish within the year.
The park commission pushes slow but steady progress on Washington park upgrades. A new water basin is contracted to Roy Davis, with bonds from contractors covering the cost. C H Boileau handles grading to elevate ground and smooth stone walks as plans call for continued yearly beautification efforts.
At the annual field meet in Chicago Burroughs captured the forty yard dash in fast time amid the Saturday events.
The Herbert & Reynard Co keeps a crowded house each evening with a No. 1 show and a full house last night. The troupe, praised as artists, plans a summer canvas return and is actively marketing for future engagements. A matinee for ladies and children also drew a full audience.
The report notes rain this afternoon with fair conditions elsewhere, followed by rain in the east portion tonight. Tuesday is expected to be fair and cooler tonight.
Faudree, a Centerville resident, was killed yesterday morning while hitching a ride home on an early passenger train. He had been in Trenton, Missouri, and after attempting a fight before the train stopped, he was crushed against the front track, rolling down an embankment.
A 1896 election notice announces a May 4 vote in the Independent School District of Washington Iowa on imposing a 10 000 tax and issuing bonds to finance a ward school building. Ballot wording specifies votes for or against the tax and bonds up to 10 000 dollars. doors open 12 to 7 pm. The secretary and board members sign the notice with local officials cited. A separate brief mentions Miss Campbell assuming duties and an advertisement for Shilohs Cure cough medicine.
A Womans Relief Corps committee has placed a flag in the county courthouse Recorder’s room. The flag, originally given in 1858 to the Washington Light Guards, later became Company 1 in the 2d Law, carried south, received a cotton flag en route, and was sent home to Mrs. Cowells. Mrs. J A McCutchen, Mrs. D Biehel berger, Mrs. A Page and Mrs. W Manners organized a handsome case for preservation.
A new poor commissioner helped a man, his wife, and another man who sought passage to Kansas City. They were fed, sheltered, and their fare paid to Pair Field, with farther travel considered charity. Also noted, W Morris jewelers received a shipment of Washington souvenir spoons with engravings for local churches and the courthouse, priced 1.10 to 1.50. A plain drunk was fined $5 by Mayor McCollum.
J Wagner, a veteran rider, claims his four year old horse may reach two minutes if unharmed. In a recent run, he and a heavy passenger covered a half mile in about 2:20, noting a nineteen foot stride. Also promotes Hall's Catarrh Cure and Karl's Clover Root Tea with testimonials and local sellers.
Two young men who joined a final theatrical outing have not returned. Reported they carried several dollars of other boys money intended to buy alcohol to bring home. One boy loaned them his clothes which were not returned.
W. J. Stubbs of Mt. Pleasant proposes a seven town league with all games hosted by each town on alternate weeks. Participating towns include Washing ton, Brighton, airfield, Ottumwa, Mt. Pleasant, St. Madison and Bona parte with one game per week on home grounds.
