Small Brush Fire at LeRoy McGraw Farm

A small trash fire near LeRoy McGraw’s farm turned into a brush fire in a field southeast of Washington. The Farmers Mutual Insurance Company fire truck arrived shortly after ten this morning to extinguish the flames, started when wind blew burning fertilizer sacks. Mrs. McGraw said the fire was quickly controlled.

Koniev Recalled From East Germany to Moscow Command

The Soviet Union recalled Marshal Ivan Koniev from heading Soviet troops in East Germany and named Colonel General Ivan Yakubovsky as his successor. The move, announced by Tass, may lessen Berlin tensions as Koniev returns to Moscow to resume ministry.

Waltonians Plan Family Night Dinner at Chapter Club House

Members of the Chicaqua chapter Izaak Walton league will host a family night dinner at 6 30 p m at the chapter club house. The Boy Scouts will present the program for the evening. Chicagua members also plan their annual Handicapped Children's Fish Day on May 11. Attendees should bring their own table service and a dish to pass. A cat fish dinner will be served.

Iowa freshman held in two theft cases

Aloysius Gmoser a 19 year old freshman from Hinsdale Illinois was jailed in Iowa City as officials weigh grand theft charges under state or federal law He admitted stealing a small arsenal from the Army Reserve Training Center last Friday and a television camera from the University of Iowa fieldhouse on March 21 Police recovered other loot including a bazooka from the Iowa River and items cached near the old Capitol building after he directed officers to the hiding place in an anonymous call.
