American troops cleared most of Nuernberg capturing a large guard of prisoners including three generals. In Paris the twin German strongholds Leipzig and Halle fell to the Allied army, signaling a crushing advance and threat of collapse on the Nazis central front.
United Press reports B 29s bomb Kyushu for the third straight day and strike Tokyo area while airfields near Tokyo are attacked by B 29s and 60 Mustangs. Marines advance on Okinawa to the northern tip as forces push inland in Mindanao amid continuing Filipino and Ryukyus combat.
The Town crop and livestock reporting service shows Washington County total farm income in 1943 at 19.56 million dollars, with 17.82 million from livestock and products and 2.06 million from crops. Including government payments and home use, the county total rises to 21.15 million. Washington records the highest gross income per acre in the area at 659.74 dollars. Hogs provide 66.1 percent of livestock income, with Keokuk County second at 62.1 percent.
Dr. Wilbur R. Miller, director of the state psychiatric hospital, told the Iowa League of Women Voters council that state facilities are better than many states’. He urged a constructive program including improved commitment procedures, restored trustee system, higher salaries, separate administration, and attendant training.

In Newton, defense rested in a 35,000 damage suit filed by Frank Galusha of Des Moines for his nephew Ben against Clar ence Maxwell and his wife Elva Maxwell after a July 6 beating. Maxwell testified that Ben had come to stay at the Maxwell farm for vacations and was a cousin of Mrs. Maxwell.
A Dows Rowan typhoid outbreak has been traced to a carrier source with 22 linked cases. No fatalities reported. The state health department says the spread occurred via refreshments served at an East Frankline Star meeting on March 12. Investigations led by Dr. F d Austin identified the carrier and households affected.
Reverend HH W Munster of the West Chester Methodist church and president of the county ministerial association says meetings are discontinued due to crop conditions. The county exceeds the state average in poultry and crops with 11.9 for Washington tied 10.8 for the state.
Nazi broadcasts report a deep Soviet advance east of Berlin with a spearhead reaching toward Strausberg nine miles from the city. German sources claim Marshal Konev’s 1st Ukrainian Army pushed 25 miles beyond the Neisse River to the Spree on a 42 mile front from Cottbus to Bautzen, 68 miles from the U S Army at Chemnitz. Moscow offers vague notices about a broad offensive before Berlin as Nazi commentators acknowledge Russian gains.
Soviet forces pierced the Seelow and Wriez hen outposts 14 miles from Berlin and pressed toward the capital. Forst on the Neisse was seized while a broad thrust toward Spree River sites aimed to link with American forces. reports say tanks breached city defenses briefly in eastern Berlin.
Peter P. Wyse 72 longtime Wayland resident died at about 8:30 this morning at his home after a heart attack. He had spent weeks in hospital with heart trouble but was at home the past several weeks. Funeral services set for 2:30 Saturday at the Wyse home with Stacy funeral home handling arrangements. born and reared in the Wayland community.

By direction of the president the Air Medal was awarded to Sergeant Henry K. Shields of Washington Iowa for meritorious achievement in aerial flight from October 2 to November 4 1944 with the Fifteenth Air Force. He was tail gunner and photographer and has been missing in action since November 4 1944 on a return bombardment mission over Germany. The decoration was sent to his parents due to the inability to present it personally.
Rome April 19 DP The Sixth Army has broken through the Argenta gap and smashed the last main German defense line below Ferrara and the Po river six miles to the north. It announces Sixth Army forces were officially reported making spectacular gains after capturing Adone ten miles south of Bologna. The 666 meter peak was the main bastion of German defenses south of Bologna and speedier progress was expected with its capture.
County superintendents from town school systems met at Washington high school for a cooperative dinner served by the wives. Dr. Van Dyke of the state university joined discussions on a postwar cooperative curriculum reform for town secondary schools. A planning committee led by Lester K. Krabill was named for a later meeting to launch the program. County Education Council officers were reelected including D. W. Githens as president and John I. Calkins as secretary-treasurer.
German defenses in Leipzig collapsed as the American 1st Army breached the city center after days of intense street fighting. Thousands of prisoners and civilians cheered the advance while Halle near the attacked city also neared fall as Bradley paused to reassess for the next phase of operations.
The U S Eighth Air Force sent about 1 150 American warplanes to strike targets in southern Germany and areas near Czechoslovakia. They bombed Palkenberg Elsterwerda Pirna Karikhad and Awse as they faced heavy anti aircraft and fighter opposition in a wide tactical raid.
In Washington on April 18 General George C Marshall met with President Truman for about fifteen minutes. Afterward Marshall refused to disclose any news about dates or plans saying he had lots to say but could not reveal details yet. He promised that when the matter is resolved he will provide more information.
