Keosauqua cleans up debris after storm

A killer tornado hit Keosauqua Iowa on Sunday killing a mother and her sailor son and injuring eight others. Rescue and Red Cross crews aided cleanup as Barker Equipment Co. faced heavy losses and local residents prepared for possible federal aid while Parsons College students joined the relief effort.

Lindbergh declines White House invite to Paris Air Show

Charles A. Lindbergh has refused a request from the White House to attend the Paris Air Show next month marking the 40th anniversary of his New York to Paris solo flight. Moyers said Johnson sought his presence but Lindbergh chose privacy over publicity.

Storms sweep nation with twisters and 70 mph winds

Tornadoes touched down in Coal City West Virginia and Maxton North Carolina causing property damage. Midwest winds reached 70 mph. Des Moines evacuated a building due to damage. Chicago reported six minor injuries and widespread damage while Lake Michigan issued boating warnings. Large hail fell in Tyler Texas and Waco saw heavy rainfall.

Fair housing bill clears committee in Iowa

In Des Moines UPI reports a House Committee recommended passage of a fair housing bill prohibiting housing discrimination in Iowa. The measure previously cleared the Senate 49 to 11. Rep Cecil Reed noted the bill would help African Americans achieve better housing and opportunities, while Rep Don Bowin cited local needs in Black Hawk County. Some members abstained to raise questions about state versus local authority in handling housing discrimination cases.

City to Use Old Quarry as One Year Landfill Site

Washington city council leased the old Gracehill Quarry for a sanitary landfill for one year with an option to renew. They will seek county help to share the $50 monthly rent so residents outside the city may use the site. They also discussed paving South 10th Avenue and solicited bids through county engineers while approving a beer permit for Washington Cafe run by Richard Powers. Tree planting at the landfill south of Washing was noted.

SEATO ministers back Vietnam policy endorsement

SEATO foreign ministers open their annual conference as President Johnson’s Vietnam plan receives strong public support. Australian Foreign Minister Hasluck credits the US with bearing the main burden and urges Western allies to back its efforts in Asia. Secretary Rusk says critics prolong the war and vows continued fighting until a durable peace is found.

Iowa Senate backs oil well bonus plan in state

The Iowa Senate passed a bill by 47 to 4 to pay bonuses for the first producing wells in Iowa. Bonuses range from 20000 to 50000 dollars depending on depth and output, with caps per oil zone. Ownership shares split between landowner and well owner.

Fires devastate three Iowa farms damaging barns and livestock

United Press International reports three northeastern Iowa farms burned on Monday. The Stecklein Brothers near Cascade lost a large barn, about 70 beef cattle, and 5000 bushels of corn as flames melted items in the farmhouse. Near Greene a fire at Leo Landers farm killed about 100 pigs and five sows with hay and other buildings damaged. A La Porte City farm of Alvin Lubena along U.S. 218 saw a big barn hog house and several pigs destroyed or damaged.

Mostly fair tonight with warmer readings in the west. Partly cloudy and warmer on Wednesday with overnight lows in the 30s and highs 55 to 60 northeast to 70 southwest. Thursday outlook shows partly cloudy skies and a chance of scattered showers.

Man Trapped Overnight After Tax Return Rush

Raymond Fernandez stayed late at his office to finish his income tax return just before the deadline. Locked in after hours, he spent the night there and handed his form to two patrolmen from a fourth-floor window, then watched as it was mailed.
