The 1968-69 term nears its close with Class Day May 23 Baccalaureate May 25 and Commencement May 28. A city fire siren caused a brief scare, but no fire occurred as workers investigated a short. Rainfall totaling .61 inches in the prior 44 hours was reported with overcast skies and light morning rain continuing, with more moisture forecast.

Iowa legislators consider removing or cutting the 3 percent shrinkage allowance on gasoline to stop absorbing too much tax through evaporation and collection costs. Oil jobbers argue the levy is a hidden 50 percent burden, with losses from uncollectible accounts and evaporation. The debate notes that surrounding states and the federal government recognize a 3 percent factor, and liens on fuel tax debts are absent, increasing distributors' costs.

Working members of the Washington Concert Association met for dinner at the Captain's Table Tuesday to kick off the membership drive for next season. They announced nearly a hundred renewal memberships completed at the concert last week and several new memberships secured at the event.
North Korea warned the United States of plans to ignite a new war in Korea after the EC121 reconnaissance plane was shot down. Gen. Choi Hyun said the incident proves U.S. imperialist aggression and warned fighting could break out at any moment. Seoul held urgent meetings as Defense Minister Im Chung-Sik urged nationwide readiness.
Sirhan B. Sirhan was found guilty today of first degree murder in the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy. The 12 jurors deliberated 16 hours 42 minutes before the verdict, determining Sirhan mentally capable of mature premeditation. A penalty phase will decide life in prison or the gas chamber at San Quentin after a one day recess.
The Iowa State Highway Commission announced plans to resurface the 9.9 mile Iowa 1 stretch from its intersection with Highway 92 north of Kalona. Bids will be accepted May 1, with work to begin after contract letting. The project calls for asphaltic concrete at least three inches deep, 24,649 tons total, 15,000 gallons of primer, reworked shoulders, and 39,822 tons of chemically treated crushed rock. One lane will remain open during construction.
Washington High School hosts its annual Fine Arts Festival in the gymnasium Friday at 8 p.m. Admission is free. Ronald Wise directs the band, Jesse Knight the vocal groups, and W.
