City authorities consolidate power as four firms assume control of governance and security. Easter approaches with the Pearl Button Center under military oversight. The day remains quiet after a disruptive night attributed to imported police arriving in the city.
The Adjutant General orders Company D of Washington and four other M G units to Muscatine to restore order amid a strike tied riot. Twenty men led by Lieut Schilling arrive before 6 am with martial law declared as crowds and police clash.
Governor Johnson signed a bill allowing jail for nonsupport with work on public roads. County pays $1.50 daily to the wife and children of the nonprovider. In Marion Indiana James Rowan, drug store proprietor and former saloon keeper, convicted of operating a blind tiger received a $500 fine, costs, and six months in jail. he will appeal.
Senator Cummins Iowa introduced a bill to require a final report by December 4 and to extend the act creating the commission to expire that date. Insurgent Republicans argue the panel lacks spending limits and that the chairman has final approval authority unchecked by auditors.
Critics say the national monetary commission is packed with former lawmakers drawing salaries equal to congressional pay. Logan convicted for killing his housekeeper faces hangings and a buried body matching Shively’s description surfaces after a sawmill fire. Also reports of seaman Marl Berry drowning and Jacob Tulla receiving news of his Hungarian wife’s death.
A tornado and waterspout devastated Conway County Arkansas on April 14. In Wooster, multiple homes and stores were destroyed including Q. J. Pearson and James Smallwood residences. Four people died at Plummersville and El Vaso was wiped out with many residents killed or injured. Heavy rainfall measured 264 percent at the government gauge within half an hour.
A tornado struck Cadet Missouri eight miles south of De Soto in Washington county killing several and injuring fifteen to twenty. The town suffered extensive destruction with ten houses left, a three quarter mile wide path, and widespread farm damage. A special train transported the injured to De Soto while wires were down. Two men from De Soto were found dead in a wrecked car near Jefferson County and another man from Cape Girardeau is missing.
A tornado system swept Missouri Oklahoma Kansas and Arkansas causing at least twenty five deaths more than one hundred injuries and over five hundred homeless. It wrought extensive property damage across multiple states with urgent relief efforts underway.
An unknown bandit boarded Santa Fe train No. 5 at Syracuse at 1 a.m. He robbed conductor BE Reilley and brakeman O Leary, then shot Reilley twice when resisting. The bandit stopped the train and fled. Reilley, wounded, was taken to La Junta Colorado hospital and is expected to recover as a posse hunts the robber.
Lansing April 14 The State Pardon Board remained in place after a vote on abolishing it. Representatives Warner and Yeo argued the board does fine work and aids the unfortunate making abolition impractical. The bill failed 28 to 36 despite the governor’s stance.
