A Midwest businessman recalls a two hour lounge car debate with a card carrying Communist on a Chicago bound train. He cites a grain of truth in communism and warns that escape from the party brings ridicule and possible government scrutiny.
A U Jean aged 83 lifelong Conesville resident died Wednesday evening at his home. Funeral services set for Saturday at 2 PM at the Evangelical and Reformed church Conesville with burial in Conesville Cemetery. Stephens Funeral Home Columbus Junction in charge. He was born March 25 1568 at Conesville son of Jacob and Melissa Jean. He married Eva Van Horn December 20 1890 and they observed their 60th wedding anniversary last December. He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge at Columbus Junction. Surviving widow include two daughters Edith Pine Knoxville and Marie John-

Weather forecast for Des Moines and state reports cloudy windy cool conditions. Rain mixed with snow expected through tonight, gradually ending in the west Friday, with highs near 35 to 45 and west lows 30 to 35, east 35 to 40. United Nations forces using bayonets flame throwers and heavy artillery pierced the main Chinese Communist defense zone in western Korea near Chorwon amid the largest air battle of the war. Allied planes flew 672 sorties as Reds resisted near the Manchurian border, with three counterattacks and fierce shelling. Turko American units captured two Han River bridgeheads after bayonet charges. Local bus riders and North Carolina village names appear in a stray closing passage.
Russell Frink assistant district engineer from the state highways commission spoke to the Washington Kiwanis Club at the YMCA about the history of the highway department and snow removal challenges. He cited stalled trucks delaying road clearance during the last heavy snowfall. The club also held a benefit dance at the country club with music by the Jimmy Dennis band.
Lt general Ridgway resumes command in Korea after a hurried Tokyo visit with MacArthur. He moves quickly back to front lines as UN forces press the Chinese defense along the 38th parallel. Pace, visiting Ridgway, heard no hint of MacArthur’s replacement before the decision was announced.
Fifty mile per hour winds and heavy rain and snow sweep eastern Iowa as the Weather Bureau warns of renewed flood danger in the next three to four days. Cedar River floodwaters recede in Cedar Rapids and Waterloo while sandbagging continues. Upstream communities report widespread displacement as Salvation Army and Red Cross aid homeless families in Waterloo. In Wapello, George Graham marks 50 years with the Masonic lodge.
County players invited to the annual ping pong tournament at the Washington YMCA on Monday evening April 23. AML singles and doubles to be completed in one night with multiple tables to speed eliminations. Trophies awarded to first and second place in both divisions. Reports from Columbus Junction indicate the Iowa River is rising at a steady rate, with several feet gained since Tuesday. The crest is expected Saturday as Backwater from Short Creek causes high water, though no evacuations have occurred and water remains on Locust Street in West Hill.
UP dispatch notes the MacArthur dismissal changes little on the Korea front. Ridgway advances with UN forces while diplomatic talks stagnate. Red China seeks UN removal and Chiangs seat, but Washington guards Formosa. fighting continues.
O. D. Rash becomes district manager for Walnut Grove Products Company based in Atlantic Iowa. He will relocate this summer with his family to Washington to supervise sixteen southeastern Iowa counties. Rash reports two sons in school and a daughter in Des Moines. He cites finding a home for July or August as a key hurdle.
