Special report from Apia April 12 describes an ambush by Mataafa warriors on a German plantation forcing about 100 American and British sailors to retreat to the beach. Three officers and four sailors died on the field. Officers Lansdale Monghan Freeman named. bodies recovered but decapitated.
In Fond du Lac Mike Berenz, accused of murdering John Blumenroeder, denies knowledge of the crime and offers conflicting statements. Details show an unpaid debt, a fiancee in Marytown, cigars found, and a new bicycle after the July robbery. Separate notes mention rail project talks in Des Moines and a hotel owner found dead in Janesville.
Coroners jury in Prentice Wisconsin ruled August Hakala was murdered and robbed of about 300 dollars and placed on the Soo Line track after being struck by a train Saturday night. The disaster led to a sensational conclusion about robbery and foul play.
Four men died and twelve or more were injured when the temporary Willis Avenue bridge superstructure over the Harlem River collapsed. The dead were Lewis Beattie, William Delaney, Walter Delany, and Thomas Grady. Serious injuries included Charles Pursley, Joseph Perry, Daniel Sheehan, H. C. Wolf, and Simon Medbo.
In Lehigh Iowa Fort Dodge newspaper reports a jealous man William Snelson tried to shoot his 17 year old sweetheart Mae Bee bee after quarrels over a suitor named Hall. He then killed himself with a pistol shot to the heart after being arrested by Constable Cutting.
Governor Roosevelt of New York spoke at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, addressing about 3,000 students. He praised college men of his regiment and their wartime service, and President Angell introduced him as a builder of history.
Roscoe Malicoat sues Drugist Danner of Elnora for 2000 dollars claiming false imprisonment. He was acquitted of burglary after a judge barred evidence about bloodhounds tracking him. The only link was that hounds tracked him near a train, with defense objections to cross examination. Authorities found no precedent.
In Racine Wisconsin the four week long engine department strike at J I Case Threshing Machine shops ended with 250 workers returning to work. The settlement mediated by D Douglas Wilson IA of Machinists and two strike leaders satisfied both sides. All men will be rehired without favoritism.
Chicago April 12 E N Zoline vice president Monticello club denies disbanding May 1 due to factional differences. A committee has been appointed to secure better quarters for the club.
Frank B. Cooper, longtime superintendent of West Des Moines city schools, has accepted the job as city superintendent of Salt Lake City. He is regarded as a leading public school figure in the western United States.
At midnight Monday rebels cut telegraph lines and fired on American outposts near Malolos, five miles south of the town. Five Americans killed and fourteen wounded at Bigaa Bocayne. three Americans killed and two wounded at Manilao Oregon outposts. Rebels suffered ten killed and six wounded and two prisoners taken. railroad damage repaired quickly and traffic resumed.
Washington reports a new turn in the Samoan dispute after talks by German ambassador Dr von Holleben with Secretary Hay and with Sir Julian Pauncefote. Berlin signals readiness to name a commissioner and accelerate the Pacific mission, while U S and Britain weigh a quickest possible transport for the high commission.
Washington April 12 The long war between the United States and Spain ended with the exchange of ratifications at the White House. President McKinley issued the peace proclamation and Bellamy Storer was named minister to Spain. Cambon and Hay signed the protocol at 8:28 p m to formalize the day’s ceremonies.
