A column notes that legislators completed action to exempt $500 of Lowe's Iowa veterans property from tax. The senate voted the exemption for discharged Iowa veterans for the second time this year with no dissent.
Des Moines reports the legislature shifting final adjournment from 5 p m Tuesday to 5 p m Thursday as session overruns. Officials note bills need enrollment typing and governor action windows, with three days to sign or veto and up to 30 days after adjournment to act.
The Iowa Farm Bureau reports 84 256 members with 31 counties meeting the year’s quota. About 9 83 old members have not paid dues. The new total is the highest since 1921 when 97 245 families belonged, with 1924 the only other year above 109 500.
Gerhardt C. Lange, 39, of Clinton County, was killed when a tractor overturned while he plowed at his farm home, crushing him beneath the machine. Acting Coroner BE. L. Martinsdale said the accident occurred late Monday and Lange died at the scene.
Des Moines report notes OPA district food rationing chief Clarence G Turner warns against black market meat amid shortages and a congressional study in Washington. Senator Wilmer Thomas declares black market meat creates outlaws while Turner defines permissible gifts and meals with surrendered points.
The state tax commission announced that William F. McFarlin, special assistant at the attorney general's office, will resign to join the Red Cross. The resignation takes effect April 14, with possible successors discussed including Jens tine of Charles City and State Representative W. Wormley.
Austrian radio reported the last three Nazi held Vienna districts Leopoldstadt Brigittenau and Margarethen liberated completing the city’s capture. Tolbukhin’s forces crossed the Danube canal into Leopoldstadt and Brigittenau while Malinovsky pressed along the east bank of the Danube near Pieredorf narrowing the escape corridor to under 100 miles.
Allied drives in Italy push from Le Spezia to Massa as the 5th Army overruns Massa and advances through Po Valley towns. In the north, the British 8th Army crosses the Senio River and captures Lugo Pasignano Cotignola near Lugo, part of Clark's 25th Army Group as operations continue.

United Press reports the American push on Naha stalled amid heavy Japanese resistance while other sectors made rapid gains. Tokyo claims three American carriers sunk off Okinawa.

William M. DeWolf, 63, was found dead in a watering tank at his son in law Alvin Hesseltine’s farm seven and a half miles southwest of Washington. Coroner Dr. Kyle ruled death by self action after DeWolf, in poor health and despondent, had recently come to the Brighton area. Funeral set for Friday at two at Sherman’s funeral home with Rev. Thomas Path. burial in Hillcrest Cemetery. He was born July 24, 1881 in Belleville Kansas and leaves wife Mary Turner, two sons Orie W. DeWolf and Harold R. DeWolf, three daughters Opal Lemley, Cecil Hesseltine, Helen McKay, 13 grandchildren, and brothers P. H. and Earl DeWolf.
Mrs. Osa Martin of Wayland Iowa, the state’s only flying grandmother, trains at Washington airport. She flies solo and seeks faster light planes, aiming to compete with male pilots at postwar air shows using an army trainer aircraft. She holds a pilot license and is grandmother to two.
A telegram says Lt Hal Nelson of Wellman is alive and well after being reported missing on a flight over Germany in April 1944. His wife in Iowa City received the message. Nelson is the son of Mrs George Lemley of Wellston and brother of Mrs Dallas Topping of Wellman.
S. W. Kaster, county campaign chairman, announces chairmen in county towns for a one week clothing drive starting April 16 to aid destitute people in allied nations. Collection centers listed. homes not to be used for collections. volunteers urged to deliver to center locations.
The Karn bureau reports a record Illinois membership total of 110 888, marking a peak for the organization within the state. The increase reflects growing participation and presence across Illinois communities.
Mr and Mrs W P Ross learn from the war department their son Staff Sergeant John A Ross was wounded in Germany and is in an army hospital. He served in Gen Pattons Third Army during the invasion of Germany near Brighton in the Brighton community.
Nine large C-46 transport planes flew in formation above Washington in a tribute to Lt. Hadley Edmondson of George Field Illinois and Lt. Donald Ferrier killed in a recent crash. The aircraft, guided by George Field instructors, cruised near the Edmondson home and then headed toward Mason City as hundreds watched from streets and yards.
The OPA announces a Lancaster style plan to curb non-highway gasoline diversion starting May 1. It uses a delivery record form to verify transfers of KE and R coupons and requires suppliers to record date, supplier details, coupon values, and recipient signature with every bulk delivery.
American 6th army units reach within 87 miles of Berlin as 3 armies push through the Ruhr toward a Red Army junction. Essen falls and Schweinfurt is surrounded as Cologne Frankfurt and seven other major cities come under Allied pressure.
London reports large American air strike on southern Germany targeting Nuernburg Bayreuth and Munich Regensburg triangle. About 1300 bombers and 850 fighters hit oil depots ordinance depots freight yards airfields and an explosive factory in the inner fortress area.
The Essen garrison was expected to surrender swiftly enabling liquidation of the Ruhr pocket. About 120000 Germans may be trapped with potential to release American units to advance toward Berlin. American 9th Army pushed five miles beyond Brunswick toward the north flank linking with Soviet forces.
A noon windstorm at the Washington airport damaged two Navy planes while five were landing. Ray Suter and field crew helped secure them. Two planes were beyond repair, the others returned to Ottumwa.
