Students in Washington Community District will end classes Thursday for spring vacation with no sessions Friday April 12 and Monday April 15. Classes resume Tuesday April 16. St James students follow the same schedule.
The Brighton Community Chamber of Commerce and retail bureau sponsor an Easter egg hunt on Saturday at 10 a.m. Pre school through sixth grade children are eligible to participate and several prizes will be awarded.
Wapello County authorities report an unidentified 18-year-old woman was found in a farmhouse eight miles west of Ottumwa. Officials say she died from a gunshot wound and investigators consider the death a homicide. an autopsy will follow.
Gov. Robert D. Ray said a veto on the Department of Transportation bill was likely if the House amendment legalizing 65 foot double bottom trucks remains. He would consider a super solution but would not commit to a veto until reviewing final form and hoped the Senate would strike the amendment.
Philip H. Willkie, 4, son of former presidential nominee Wendell L. Willkie, was found dead in the garage at his Rush County farm home near Rushville. Officials said he died likely of natural causes as he prepared to drive to his offices. His wife Virginia found him at 6:50 am. an autopsy was planned by Coroner George Todd.
Richard S. Bordwell filed nomination papers for the Republican nomination for Washington County Attorney. No other candidates have announced for either party. Bordwell, practicing law in Washington for about two years, seeks the first four year term. primary polls are set for June 4.
Rankin told the Senate Ways and Means Committee that while a 184 million dollar year surplus is possible, four major tax break plans could create a deficit of up to 33 million in 1977. Gov. Ray urged caution and said some measures may need trimming to avoid spending gaps.
The Iowa House approved a DOT creating measure 69 to 29 with a Nielsen 65-foot double bottom truck amendment adopted 52 to 45. Leaders plan Senate changes and Governor Ray warned he may veto if the trucks remain.

The Senate defeated an amendment to strike public financing provisions and moved toward final passage of broad reform. The bill would fund presidential and congressional elections, establish a federal elections commission, cap individual contributions at 3000 dollars, and set eight to twelve cent subsidies per voter. The body approved cloture to limit debate, with a final vote possible before Easter recess.
The White House plans to give the House Judiciary Committee additional material for its impeachment inquiry by month’s end. Rep. Rodino estimates a late June committee report with possible further witness calls. Ford pledges tapes and material. Scott notes tape-review time could delay action.

Prime Minister Golda Meir announced she will resign on Thursday amid a government crisis sparked by calls for Defense Minister Moshe Dayan to quit over Israel’s unpreparedness during the October 6 Yom Kippur War. The coalition remains fragile after Gen. David Elazar’s recent resignation as chief of staff.
