Iowa Mines Shot Safe Says State Inspector
Iowa coal mines are as safe as any in the country says George Duckworth, state mine inspectors secretary. Of six Iowa mines closed by the federal government after the Centralia disaster, the largest near Waukee has reopened. Three others were not operating at the time. The state reports no serious explosions since 1902 near Oskaloosa. Gas is not a major Iowa hazard. Inspectors visit all 166 mines at least twice yearly, with some as many as 15 to 20 times. Falling slate remains the key danger, with two deaths in 1946. Five total fatalities were recorded that year, the rest from moving vehicles. Coal output fell from 1917’s record 6,049,805 tons to 2,071,648 tons in 1945, with fatalities dropping more sharply.
