Barbara Jean Maule, five year old daughter of Rev Theodore and Mrs Maule, died in an Ames hospital after burns from clothing catching fire near a school bonfire. She wore a costume dress for a school performance, and a janitor believed the fire was out before a gust rekindled flames.
Kenneth M. Seeley 25 and Harold J. Keegan 28 were jailed again after pardons by Gov. Hickenlooper to delay service in the army failed on medical grounds. They had been sentenced to 60 days for driving while intoxicated.
Clarinda selects Arthur E. J. Johnson 49 of Red Oak Iowa as new city manager. Johnson is Red Oak city engineer since 1933 and succeeds W D Toyne who resigns effective May 1. Johnson previously served as Red Oak city manager from 1924 to 1930 and returns after a brief sales period.
Ottumwa public safety commissioner G. K. Rhoads orders officers to abstain from alcohol while on duty, forbids entry to establishments selling liquor except in line of duty, and bans intoxication at any time.
INDIANOLA Stanley E. Pratt has resigned as chairman of the Warren county selective service board. In a letter to the state board he said he faced mounting criticism as the county board is to begin drafting men married before Sept 16 1940 and his own status would be affected.
Mr and Mrs Harry Rimmerman announce remodel plans for the Rockwood store starting four weeks from Monday April 19. Floor space will increase to add show cases along sides and rear creating about twenty extra feet at the back. Alteration department will move to the balcony with more departments to follow quickly.

Dinner by Dave Elder Mable Elther and helpers featured chicken and noodles potato salad cookies ice cream and orangeade. Iowa farmers hold ample supplies of corn oats and wheat as of April 1 1948 with corn stocks totaling 357 199 000 bushels up 7 percent from last year and 15 percent above the 1932-41 average oats at 60 074 000 bushels slightly above 1942 and 11 year averages wheat clearly increased by CCC held feed wheat stocks soybeans show declines from January 1 due to orderly marketing.
Civil Air Patrol held a meeting at the armory with detached flights from Columbus Junction and Morning Sun plus Washington area residents. Foster Bickel spoke on recognizing airplane types and displayed navy plane models built by Washington high school trainees. Spotter duties along the seacoast were described. Lieut Choate drilled the squadron for an inspection by Lieut Lemmon, Foss, and Hines.
The Journal informs that the name of a South grade pupil should read Les lie Guile instead of Leslie Guile Morgan as printed yesterday in the publication list.
Crest of the Missouri River flood moves toward Sioux City as Governor B B Hickenlooper orders three Iowa State Guard companies totaling about 180 men mobilized for duty along the flood area. Nebraska guards already mobilized around Omaha. Kennedy area roads and sewer systems face disruption as officials evacuate families and prepare pumping units.
At the American Pearl Button company factory workers voted on union representation. The Amalagamated Clothing Workers of America proposal was defeated by 118 to 96 with one spoiled ballot and eight contested. The election was supervised by national labor relations board officials.
Iowa State Guard medical detachment including two officers and fifteen men from Fairfield under Lt. Col. Roy A. McGuire was dispatched to flood areas by Gov. Hickenlooper. The Iowa liquor control commission provided trucks and bedding, with the highway patrol supplying escort to Council Bluffs. Col. John A. Shaw surveyed the scene in Council Bluffs to assess need for federal aid.
Riverside donors push Red Cross campaign toward a 15000 goal as solicitors in the county tally more gifts. A recent receipt at Red Cross headquarters brings in 338.35 from Riverside and 1490.08 from Crawfordsville and Washington theater collections, with more expected today.
The jury in the Smith of Keota versus Pine of Columbus Junction suit awarded Victor In damages $3949 for injuries from a February 1942 car crash on highway 2 west of Washington. Trial began after 2:30 PM the previous day with Judge Patterson presiding. The judge plans to resume jury trials in Washington next week after opening a new term at Sigourney.
Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox said in Indianapolis that the fighting fleet will more than double this year and fleet tonnage will rise about 66 percent, signaling a major buildup of U S naval power.

Frank J. Salladay 76 of Highland township died at 0:55 pm at his daughter’s home near Washington after a stroke six weeks earlier. Born November 3, 1866 in Des Moines County, he lived in Highland all his married life with Mattie Luella Stewart. Surviving are his wife, three daughters, two sons, 11 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and two sons in law. Funeral Sunday at 2 pm at L. A. Jones funeral home with Rev. Ivan Riess. burial in Ainsworth Cemetery.
