Bimer P. Corwin a former state senator from Fruitland will succeed John P. Clarkson as Iowa industrial commissioner on July 1. Governor Hickenlooper sent the appointment to the senate and the nomination was confirmed in the same session.
President Roosevelt and James Byrnes announced a plan to set specific retail price ceilings on many commodities beyond food items to curb inflation. The approach targets costs of living and will be outlined under the hold the line program with enforcement challenges noted.
Washington public schools superintendent W A Erbe released lists of 96 high school candidates for graduation and six junior college students awaiting diplomas pending satisfactory work. Eighth grade completion lists show 65 students ready to advance to high school next year. Rev Ivan Riess is chosen to deliver the baccalaureate sermon May 9 at the Methodist church, with Dr Robert E Lee Hill of Missouri University as commencement speaker May 13.
A long list of graduates from the high school includes David Palmer Livingston Ruth E. Applegate William R. Arnold Margery A. Logan Martha Doreen Long Kathryn Jean Atchison Rosa Genevieve Baker and many others. The ceremony acknowledged certificates for the class with parents and community support noted in attendance.
In Keokuk vandals scraped glass from plate glass windows of 20 stores causing over 1000 dollars in damage. Police set a 50 dollar reward for capture. One large window valued at over 50 dollars was cracked through, alarming the store owner.
Commissioner G E B Rhoads told 50 of Ottumwa's 84 tavern operators gathered Thursday to demand better conditions. He promised fairness but urged full cooperation to keep venues clean and bar minors from entry, with operators advised to exercise discretion in drink sales.
Judge W A McCullough of municipal court fined a Clinton father and mother 20 dollars each for not enforcing school attendance. The judge noted 20 dollars is the maximum fine and suspended the penalties if the boys return to school and resist spring’s pull.

Good Friday April 23 at Baptist church features seven speakers on Seven Last Words of Christ. Easter April 25 union service at Christian church with Rev. Riess delivering sermon.
The Iowa House defeated the Senate school bill 46 to 85 and tabled the measure after Representative Wilson Reed called it botched and unconstitutional. The bill proposed a $750000 annual appropriation for state aid to public schools.
Chairman Roger Sherman reports Washington county Red Cross has $11,807 in cash from April 1 to 7 theater collections and salvage drives. State and Fox theaters contributed $586.60 with $297.80 to State and $88.80 to Fox, plus $5.63 from salvage. Additional receipts from Wellman Kalona and country districts may push county total toward $15,000.
The county reports March totals of 5 063 pairs of silk and nylon hose, ton and a half of rubber, ton and a half of rags, and only 17 1/2 tons of iron and metals. State salvage head warns iron shortages threaten mills unless scrap rush continues and county must meet a 1 138 ton six month quota.
Washington county reports 650,962.50 in war bonds sold in January to March, 126 percent of the planned portion. March alone totals 299,259 with January and February at 351,703.50. County chairman G. E. Mace notes April to May drive aims at 820,000, urging bankers and Lee Holland of Washington State Bank to lead. Bible contributors noted. campaign to close by Saturday night.

Nearly a hundred American Pearl Button company workers gathered at K P Hall last evening to prepare for a union election this afternoon. About thirty five Chamber of Commerce members attended, along with Muscatine union officers and Ed Shulthies, national representative of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, who spoke on methods and purposes of the organization as it would apply locally.
Representatives of the serum center of the state health department will visit the county health unit on Friday afternoon April 16 to buy blood from individuals who recently recovered from scarlet fever measles or whooping cough. Donors will receive five dollars for a half pint. Requirements include age 12 or older with parental consent for minors and a record of recent illness. Arrangements are underway for a clinic in Washington county to obtain normal blood for a blood plasma bank with public notices to follow.
