A Des Moines meat market employee Mrs. R. K. Smith was struck on the head and robbed of $203. Police recovered $103 from one of two purses later found.
Des Moines tenants and patrons, including many children, evacuated the Beaver theater as a $5,000 blaze consumed the Masonic lodge kitchen on the building's second floor. Firefighters fought the fire, preventing spread while authorities investigated the cause.
Le Mars report: John Vander Brook 14 of Rock Valley died from injuries when a cornstalk cutter he operated ran over his leg and injured his abdomen. His mother Mrs. William Vander Brook provided one of three blood transfusions to aid his recovery.
Cedar Falls police finally located Robert Linzmeyer, 24, of Milladore Wisconsin, in the station after about an hourlong search. He surrendered to officers with a loaded pistol and confessed he lacked the nerve to commit the holdup at Holm grocery. J S Holm, 70, owner, had been threatened as the would be bandit fled to the rear of the store.
Newton Fire Chief W L Koeppine found three long eared burros on the firehouse lawn Easter morning. He suspected they looked like rabbits then realized the dogs were too big. The police later located the owner Frank B Drake who claimed them Sunday.
Mason City council acted in emergency session to extend the fire limits by prohibiting any gasoline storage tanks above ground within the city limits. The move followed Tanker Gas Inc. seeking permits for two 19 000 gallon tanks that would push total ground storage to 89 000 gallons, deemed a fire hazard by Fire Chief D H Shire.
Cedar Falls plans for the ninth annual conference on play production at Iowa State Teachers College center on a matinee of Moor Horn by Dan Totheroh. Nearly 1,000 high school students and teachers are to be guests of the college for the performance.
Pontious girl Betty Pontious aged 15 in Des Moines has improved steadily after surviving a rare blood disease that destroyed red blood cells. Doctors credit vitamin K with saving her life after eight prior blood transfusions kept her alive. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Pontious.
A 15 year old Iowa high school student was awarded a gold medal for distinguished musicianship on a National Broadcasting Co. radio program. Robert Pfaltzgraff of Dumont performed as guest soloist on the Armco band program playing his xylophone in a William Tell selection. The Armco band invites outstanding young musicians to appear each Sunday based on state and national honors.
Easter Sunday drew wide attendance as mild weather boosted church services across Washington. Sunrise sermons, baptisms, and new member receptions occurred with prominent Easter music led by the United Presbyterian choir under Miss Carolyn Hamilton. Special masses and cantatas highlighted St James and other churches.
At United Presbyterian Church an Easter cantata titled The Resurrection composed by Charles F. Man will be performed. The program features choral and instrumental sections and invites parishioners to attend the service.
The Iowa House, 71 to 25, voted to abolish the state planning board. The move came after a prior Senate stand to keep it. An amendment to the $3,000 March 1 to April 16 1939 appropriation would end salaries, rent, and bills for the board.
Dennis Clancy died at 8:20 last evening at his home 603 North Avenue B after a brief illness. Born July 29, 1878 in Washington he lived here his whole life and ran the Gong cafe with Carl Burris and later the Iowa cafe with Art Minick. He married Mary McChurch in 1911 and was a member of St James church. He is survived by two sisters and a brother. funeral Wednesday at St James with burial in Kim Grove cemetery.
President Roosevelt flew back to Washington from Warm Springs encountering Secretary Hull and Treasury Secretary Morgenthau at the station. Officials fear a rapid European showdown could occur within a week and the president warned he might return in the fall if war is not avoided.
Captain Jay Brown of Troop F said the weekly drill will be held indoors at City Hall this evening due to today’s rain leaving the cavalry stable and field wet and muddy.
Rain began early this morning and continued into the afternoon with steady but light force. Forecasters predict colder temperatures and a chance of snow tonight. The arrival of spring remains uncertain.
Judge Frank Beehly adjourned Washington county district court to an indefinite date. He opens a new term at Sigourney this week and plans to return to Washington in May to complete March term business. More jury trials may be heard then.
Johnny Torrio, last of the prohibition racketeers, pleads guilty to evading over 86 000 in federal income taxes. William Stackbower and James Lapenna also plead guilty to conspiracy as the judge schedules sentencing for Wednesday. Two codefendants did not plead and await dates for a possible new trial.
Five men all teachers form a schoolmasters team to face five freshmen girls in a spelling bee on the Big Broadcast show at the State Theater. Teams include coaches Kenneth Kim berlin Fred Maasdam Tom Parsons Walter Lus eky and George Mohr. Prize-ordered rounds offer rewards from 1 cent to 50 cents per word with a treasure chest and finals.
About 25 Washington residents attended the horse show at Des Moines state fairgrounds over Saturday and Sunday nights. Among them were Captain Jay Brown Lieutenants Walter Conner Max Donaldson Harry Donaldson and W G Eldridge plus twelve Troop FP men. The event featured about 20 horses and riders from the regular army, poised to form this year’s Olympic jumping team. Also performing were mounts from the 14th Cavalry Fort Des Moines and the Des Moines contingent of the 114th Cavalry.
Paris reports France and Britain agreed to stop Mussolini by arms if he advances in the Mediterranean. Rome says Mussolini postponed Albania entry amid tensions. London notes Italy calls up 330000 more reserves to 900000 and recalls med naval officers while envisaging Greek aid debates.
Sheriff H. M. Putnam arrested Lester Black about 25 at Ottumwa’s request on an assault charge. Black, believed from Ottumwa, allegedly seized a wedding guest and tried to force her into a car, with a razor-wielding man pursuing but Black escaped. Ottumwa police planned to transport him to Ottumwa to face the charge.
