An inventory of the estate of Rev James Sheehy, 66, of Waucoma, was filed. The estimated value is $62,739. He bequeaths $1,000 to the late Pope Pius XI and $1,000 to Rev Francis J. L. Beckman, archbishop of Dubuque.
Cedar Falls hosts the annual meeting of deans of men with more than 70 Iowa colleges represented. Speakers include O. R. Latham president of Iowa State Teachers college Dean Shelton L. Beatty Grinnell Dr Lonzo Jones State University of Iowa and Dean M D Helser Iowa State College.
Voters approved a special election measure to erect and operate a municipal electric light and power plant costing not more than 136000 dollars. The unofficial tally was 437 yes to 354 no, with financing to be through revenue bonds per City Clerk C F Dickson.
Iowa merchants paid 4 019 000 in sales tax to the state treasury in the March 31 quarter to set a five year record. State Tax Chairman David L Murrow said the return shows retail outlets moved over 200 million dollars in the final three months of last year.
Velman Fitch, 21, son of Dr. J. E. Fitch, reportedly part of a 15 man crew on a Chinese junk lost at sea. The vessel, captained by writer explorer Richard Halliburton, sailed from Hong Kong toward the San Francisco World Fair, departing in March and expected at Midway April 5. Fitch left home last November to tour the world, visiting Germany, France, Singapore, and Hong Kong. The junk, 75 feet keel and 20 feet beam, is powered by a gasoline motor.
Ottumwa reports the body of an unidentified man found in the Des Moines river at Chillicothe. A wire was twisted around his waist and a gunny sack with a hole where a weight may have slipped through. Officials could not determine if death was by drowning or foul play.
A rural school yard incident near Odebolt led to a two-vehicle collision seven miles northeast. Mail carrier J H Hansen pulled aside after hearing honks he believed indicated a turn, and Theodore Forewiering driving behind Hansen collided with the Hansen vehicle.
Julia Baldwin McKibben died recently in California leaving a Bloomfield Iowa funeral set for Monday at 4:30 PM local time. Interment will be in Bloomfield. Her son George, a lawyer, and his wife have adopted five children from The Cradle to Evanston.
Washington County reports 702 farmers sealed for 1988 federal corn loans totaling 716 373 bushels at 57 cents per bushel amounting to 408 332 61 dollars. 97 051 bushels were resealed on prior year loans, with 100 loans totaling 55 3356 dollars renewed.
Five Washington High School freshmen girls challenge five men teachers to a spelling bee on The Big Broadcast at the State theater Wednesday evening. The girls are Audrey Hotle Caroleen Barter Nellie Anderson Georgeanne Rudiger and Dorothy Watson. The contest mirrors NBC Sundays at 4 30 with oral spelling giving the girls a potential edge. Rev Carl W Klein of St Pauls Evangelical preached The Message of the Cross for Today in the final service of the union program for Washington's week before Easter. Sheriff H M Putnam investigated overnight burglaries in Kalona where two businesses were entered. At the D X oil station 14 gallons of gasoline were stolen and a refrigerated locker cash register opened for pennies. A kinross link was noted with $50 in cash and merchandise taken from two stores.
Two airmen about 25 years old were killed when their plane crashed 14 miles east of the Moline airport. The victims were Arnold Johnson and James Stamp, sons of East Moline.
The Journal secures Paul Lofgren to publish portrait cartoons of local business and professional leaders. Images and short biographies will run daily starting later this month, with maps and street diagrams for Washington and nearby firms. Early installments focus on south side firms then South Marion avenue, each portrait kept secret until publication.
Mrs Amanda Reed was carried to a neighbor after her eight room house burned. Her daughter Mrs Fawn Jackman wed with her. Most furnishings were saved.
C C Gardner of Wellman dies at Mercy hospital Iowa City aged 84 after a seventeen day stay. He was a prominent local businessman and longtime church member. Funeral set for Monday at 2 30 pm in Wellman Methodist church with Rev Paul Hann officiating. burial in Lexington cemetery. He was born in Seventy six township Washington county and was married sixty years last September 17.
Farmers Savings Bank Kalona Iowa declares payment of the fifth dividend on 40 percent trust certificates. Dividend begins Monday April 10 1939 and holders are urged to bring certificates to the bank for proper credit at their earliest convenience.
A large audience heard the Presbyterian choir perform The Seven Last Words of Christ by DuBois last evening. Harold Reeves of Cedar Rapids stood out in tenor solos, especially Father Into Thy Hands I Commend My soul. Stephen Eggleston shared in I Am Athirst with Reeves, delivering refined baritone tenor phrasing. The ensemble showcased strong training, balance, and a reverent, uplifting tone throughout.
