Officials announced the annual high school music festival will run April 1 to 2 at the University of Iowa. The 1936 program lists 34 events, one more than last year, with 22 events for individual contestants.
Fairfield reports a 400 percent rise in employment placements in March from the previous year. Manager Alva Aldridge of the national reemployment service was cited as confirming the increase.
A Davenport motorist reports youths tossed sticks of dynamite at his car and others. Police could not locate the boys after investigation but recovered the dynamite behind a billboard.
Prof Edward Mabie announces the final 1935-36 University theatre cast. Maxwell Anderson's Elizabeth the Queen will open May at Macbride auditorium on May 14, replacing a planned performance in the new dramatic arts building which won’t be ready until fall.
Mr and Mrs Roy Beguhn welcome a 4 pound baby boy at St Luke's hospital Davenport. The infant is in an incubator and reported doing well. This marks the second tiny Davenport birth in two days following a 3 pound son born yesterday to Mr and Mrs Carl Stoeder.
An Iowa City student seeking home for Easter vacation stood by the road with a printed plea reading Des Moines Please. He waved his thumb and soon secured a ride homeward, proving a course in hitchhiking can work.

Senator Smith W. Brockhart, the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, accepts an invitation from Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce to open his campaign on the night of April 23 in Palo Alto County. He plans to present clear, concise policy positions in Emmetsburg.
The German airship Von Hindenburg with 38 passengers landed at Friedrischen after a rough trip home from Brazil. Engine trouble reduced two of four motors, forcing an altered route via the Rhone valley and French coast. Authorization disputes with France delayed the planned circling of France.
Dr. Richard L. Sutton of Kansas City, a world traveling skin specialist, will appear under the Washington County Medical Society. A clinical meeting is on the program for May 27 with physicians from five or six counties. Sutton has hunted and fished globally including Africa Fiji India Australia and the Arctic.
John Rust Godell, 68, died in a Mason City hospital from blood poisoning caused by a rat bite and pneumonia. He was bitten on the hand by a rat while gathering eyes ten days earlier.
Dr. Samuel Garvin delivered a confession themed sermon on Jesus Christ at the Methodist Church despite uncertain weather. Dr. B F Schwartz announced preludes, Irene Seallanbusch sang a vocal solo, and Rev. D Patton led prayers as Garvin highlighted Christ’s life and the night before the crucifixion.
Harold T. Smith of Parsons College and Samuel C. Ham of Iowa Wesleyan will sing bass and tenor solos in The Holy City. Soprano and mezzo-soprano solos will be performed by Mrs. Edmund Morrison Jr. and Mrs. Bernice Warren. The United Presbyterian church hosts the 7 30 p m concert with Miss Carolyn Hamilton directing the combined choirs and organist Helen Harvey with pianist Mrs. B F Schwartz providing accompaniment. Donald Benblossom decorates the church and patrons are urged to arrive early.
Clinton laid claim to a “mortal mite” baby born premature at two pounds ten ounces. The infant, son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Burman, was kept alive by incubator and oxygen tent and appears normal to hospital staff.
Colonel Charles James Wilson, longtime public figure and former state legislator, died this afternoon in Washington Iowa at his son in law and daughter Mayor R L Lyte’s home. Funeral is scheduled Sunday at 3 PM, with statewide regard for his fifty plus years as a lawyer and public servant.
James DeWit president of the Brotherhood announces that Dr Ivan J Lubbers president of Central college Pella will headline the Monday night dinner at the Presbyterian church. Reservations are urged and tickets for the dinner are advised. The event is set for six thirty with a large attendance hoped for.
Clarence C. Hotle sues E. S. Percival of Cleveland Ohio for damages from a road accident near West Chester on February 19 1935. The case reached the jury yesterday at 2 30 p m and had not reached a verdict by this afternoon. The jurors lodged at the Congress hotel and planned further closed door deliberations.
Betty Parker Fulbert Martin, 32, shot her husband Andrew Martin, 37, five times in the bar room of the Golden Gray night club after he entered with another woman. She claimed he had “done me wrong.” A jury recommended holding her for murder.
A Chevrolet coupe driven by Lee Jones ran from control on North Marion avenue striking a parked car and crashing onto a porch. In justice court Jones pleaded guilty to reckless driving paid $3.40 in costs had one license coupon removed and restitution made to the porch owner and the parked car owner.
Former Mexican president Plutarco Elias Calles and four close allies were seized in a surprise raid and deported on suspicion of bombing a railway train near Vera Cruz that killed over a dozen. Calles and associates protested as one hundred soldiers surrounded the capitol at midnight before transfer to a central airport.
Former president Plutarco Elias Taylor arrives in Pampico at 10 29 a m with fellow prisoners and his son Alfredo aboard a port transfer. The arrival marks a prominent development in the ongoing exile case.
About 125 couples attended a benefit dance hosted by the ways and means committee last night. The event was the final in a series of dances to raise funds.
Joseph Wolf 85 died at his home after a two week illness from a fall injury. Funeral at St. James Church with burial in Elm Grove. Rosary at his home. Born March 14, 1851 in Piqua Ohio, survived by wife Sophia and children Louis Leo Bernard Minnie Vera Ruth eight grandchildren. one daughter deceased.
Charles Bear of Washington high school won first place in the dramatic division at the pre district declamatory contest in Marengo. Winners advancing to Davenport on April 17 include Regina Steck first oratorical, Don Crambeck second, Albert Baxter second in dramatic, Wanda Lee Carter first humorous, with James Banouray and Charles Bear also placing in various categories.
An automobile owned by Walter Barnett was slightly damaged about two o'clock this morning when struck by a car driven by John Young. Barnett's car was parked on West Harrison street near the Marion street corner. Young's car skidded while turning from Marion onto Harrison.

His wife and father hurry toward the hospital as efforts continue. Meantime Mrs Meyer Ellen Stein Newark mayor’s wife remains in serious condition after blood transfusions. Milly H Granger stewardess recovering.
The House Post Office Committee will consider leaving the Bureau of Air Commerce with civil aviation jurisdiction after violent criticism over the deaths of 11 people. Chairman Mead said a hearing is set for next Tuesday in Washington D C.
