Denver dispatch reports ex Senator Tabor died today in Denver from appendicitis. A separate line recalls Gen Lawton’s forces at Santa Cruz driving rebels into mountains. American casualties were six wounded while rebel losses reached sixty eight killed and forty wounded.
The Lawton expedition of 1,590 men sails from San Pedro Macati toward Laguna de Bay to seize Santa Cruz and scout south toward unexplored country. Rebels test weakened lines but are repelled as the force advances by river, gunboats, and canoes escorted by General Lawton and General King. Also noted is casualties list from Manila and ongoing war losses.
Warden McClaughry says a plan to move Joliet penitentiary to another city is a distant prospect. Springfield resolutions authorize a governor appointed commission to study the idea, with officials noting drainage and yard flooding as factors along with the age of the institution.
Chicago resident William Dettenner was beaten into insensibility near Hammond Indiana and robbed of $7000 sewn inside his trousers. Police arrested bartender George Tallison, suspected in a drive with Dettenner after a heavy drinking trip to Highlands. Dettenner, who claims German inheritance, says the money was his first payment.
Justice Field of the United States Supreme Court dies at his Capitol Hill home at 6 20 PM after kidney trouble. The long life details his California ties, 1889 murder trial impact, and notes his retirement in 1898. Also reported is Almon M. Clapp’s death in Washington at age 84, former government printer and Republican party delegate.
Havana April 10 Cuban generals who elected General Gomez as commander in chief had not officially notified him by 7 PM yesterday. Reports say a committee planned to meet him that evening while tensions and reports varied with little substantive action observed.
Tension rises as Cuban leaders clash over who may act in Deliberations while General Gomez is expected to be reinstated. Railway strikes halt Havana province links and even milk delivery. A Matanzas squad unearthed Spanish gold coins dating 1720 to 1808 worth 306 dollars.
Evansville April 10 Edna Cox twelve years old wed John Garrett aged forty at parents urging. After the ceremony the girl refused to live with him saying she did not love him. She left his home and stayed with a friend while her parents refused to take her back. She declares she has left her husband for good. Stephen Johnson Field, born November 4 1816 in Haddam Connecticut, was part of the Field brothers including David Dudley Cyrus West and Henry Martyn. He studied at Williams College, studied law in New York, practiced in California, served as judge and Chief Justice, and was later on the U S Supreme Court after Lincoln’s appointment in 1863 and active in California law and education.
In Des Moines on April 10 the Iowa Supreme Court ruled M Snyder of Grinnell guilty of maintaining a liquor nuisance despite shipping liquor to a dry town in packages with fictitious wills and light drafts. The court held ownership not required to sustain the charge. In Veedersburg Indiana a dynamite explosion killed a farmer’s wife and daughter, leveling their home after he thawed seventy five pounds of dynamite. Also Des Moines surveying began on a Duluth and New Orleans railroad line extending from Minneapolis south through Iowa and Missouri toward the Lakes via Pittsburgh interests.
