Progress Show Brings City Size Event to Southeast Iowa

A 250000 population city will rise on eight miles north of here for the 1977 Farm Progress Show from Sept 27 to 29. McKinnie, manager for Wallaces Farmer and Prairie Farmer, plans 400 exhibitors, free admission, and demonstrations of farm gear, crops, and soil practices across 1000 acres on the Crawford and Stewart Jones farms.

Apprehend few in liquor sales

DES MOINES Iowa liquor store or lounge operators face license violations with 66 hearings in 1976. Of 4,286 licensed establishments 56 suspensions occurred, three licenses were revoked, and many cases continued. DPS and law officers stress enforcement and deterrence to curb underage sales and liquor violations.

Farmers plan 10.6 percent rise in soybean acreage

The American Soybean Association says farmers will plant 55.7 million acres this season, up from 50.3 million a year earlier, amid tight supplies and high prices. Dr. Kenneth L. Bader cites false speculative demand while real demand declines, easing pressure before the fall harvest. He notes processing at 6 to 8 percent of normal rates and livestock feeders trimming high protein soybean meal use. He commends Secretary Bergland for denying an impending soybean export embargo.

Three Iowans charged in bank robbery case

DES MOINES UPI three men were arrested by FBI agents and local officers for the East Euclid Valley National Bank robbery on Feb 28 in Des Moines about $13000 was taken. Gerald Weir 34 Daniel Davis 38 Andrew Jackson 29 are charged with bank robbery at gunpoint and face additional counts for a Des Moines supermarket and two armored car robberies.

Boats Carry Food Into Flooded Areas

United Press International reports severe floods across six southeastern states. Lifesaving boats ferried food to Alabama families trapped by waters while police patrolled to deter looting and keep tourists from hindering cleanup in Kentucky. Authorities cite 23 deaths and 24 000 displaced as Appalachia towns faced up to 30 foot flood marks.
