A single engine plane piloted by Dick Keigley from Kirksville Missouri to Cedar Rapids reported smoke odor and landed in Washington. Fire crews met the plane at the municipal airport after Cedar Rapids relayed the alert. No fire found. investigators traced the issue to a malfunctioning circuit breaker.
A strong odor of natural gas and an explosion were reported as the possible cause of a 300000 fire south of Burlington. The Oasis Supper Club three miles south burned to the ground. a nearby motel being remodeled was saved by West Burlington and four area departments. The fire was under investigation. Fire units from Denmark, Wever, Danville and Mediapolis aided West Burlington.
Denver High School will not hold classes until further notice after weekend vandalism estimated over 30,000 dollars. Two juveniles were held by Bremer County authorities in connection with the break in, as damage included destroyed toilets f ountains glass destruction of the chemistry laboratory flooded rooms overturned bookshelves and damaged driver education car.
The Washington Community School District Board of Education schedules a 7:30 p.m. meeting in the high school library to discuss teacher contract talks with the Washington Education Association. Negotiations at 8:15 p.m. focus on base pay with a tentative $100 gap and possible board offers, pending WEA member vote. Other agenda items include salary dates for other staff and driver education compensation.
President Nixon signs a bill raising the federal minimum wage from 1.60 to 2.00 per hour covering about 56.5 million workers including domestic service and many in chain stores. He calls the measure just and notes reservations but backs the goal of justice in higher pay.

Iowa City UPI reports Brian Petratz aged 23 and William Warner aged 37 were jailed in Johnson County after a tip led to arrests in connection with several break-ins at rural residences in southern Johnson County on Sunday.
Legislative leaders say the 1974 Iowa session may end April 19 if major issues like a Department of Transportation merit pay and Board of Regents funding are resolved. otherwise adjournment could slip to April 26. Gov Ray and Lt Gov Neu express cautious optimism.
The Iowa House will resume debate on a bill creating a state department of transportation on Tuesday. Governor Ray warns he could veto the DOT measure if it includes a 65 foot double bottom truck amendment pushed by Rep. Carl Nielsen, who claims 51 votes. Ray denies pressure tactics and urges a reasonable approach.
Washington Senator Henry M. Jackson said rising oil and gas prices are partly caused by oil brokers and their paper transactions. He announced hearings to study brokers’ role during the crisis, warning against letting would be brokers be dismissed lightly.
Iowa campaign check-off on state income tax shows Democrats about twice as popular as Republicans. Through processed returns, $21,891 was designated for Democrats and $10,956 for Republicans. The program allows any taxpayer paying over $1 to donate $1 to a party. the amount is part of the tax but does not affect tax owed or refunds.
A UPI summary reports a 70 percent chance of a great earthquake in densely populated Pacific Coast areas within 30 years. The Interior Department notes risks elsewhere, cites past severe quakes, and urges action including a warning system, better building standards, and improved land use and emergency planning.
Washington High School band earned seven Division I ratings, nine Division II ratings, and three Division III ratings at the state solo and ensemble contest in Albia. Director Charles Shanks praised the result, noting it as a rare first-time appearance in several years.
Elmer Schneider, a Riverside area farmer and former 4-H leader, filed nomination papers today as a Democrat for the Washington County Board of Supervisors seat now held by Cliff Conklin who will not seek re election. Schneider, a Marine Corps Korean War veteran and Riverside High School graduate, has served on the Highland School Board and county Beef and Pork Producers Association and led Riverside 4 H for 19 years. He aims to improve cooperation between county government and townships and to meet with township trustees to discuss county problems.
