The Shaffers of Washington reported their horse missing but later found it grazing contentedly at its former home. The incident followed the animal’s move from a north Washington pasture to a new field before escaping.
The Iowa Senate voted 47 to 0 to approve a bill providing health insurance benefits for children from birth for the first 14 days. Sponsor Minnette Doderer of Iowa City said coverage is needed during the high risk early life period when most policies exclude newborns.
Iowa Democrats meet at 99 county conventions to discuss platforms and guide later state and district conventions. Gubernatorial hopefuls William Gannon Clark Rasmussen and James Schaben urged delegates to stay uncommitted to avoid divisive groups. The party has urged preference based delegate selection in case no candidate clears 35 percent in the primary.
William Chaney Grand Dragon of the Indiana Klan faced jeers and catcalls from about 3 000 during a controversial talk at the University of Northern Iowa. A student disrupted the speech by pulling the microphone before guards escorted him away. Rev Leland Grove will finish church work on Easter Sunday and move to a farm near What Cheer with Mrs Grove remaining in Washington to finish her school term as dean of girls. Rev Elmer Baker will assume the vacated pastorate in Washington arriving from Stanhope on April 15.
United Press International reports Americans start self initiated drives to raise nearly 500000 for President Nixon’s back taxes. Nixon says he will pay every penny himself using savings and borrowed funds while accepting donations but declining to rely on others. GOP leaders in Louisiana Illinois Kentucky spearhead efforts and a Whitesburg Kentucky fund has already surpassed 250 dollars.
President Nixon plans a Michigan visit to campaign for James M. Sparling in the 8th District. Sparling challenged Nixon to face the people with tough answers. Ford and Gov. Milliken may not join. Saginaw News urged Nixon to stay home or resign.
Iowa moves to replace county and joint county districts with regional education agencies for enhanced special education. The House approved the plan 84-4 after hours of debate, adopting limits on bonding and superintendent salaries while maintaining focus on student services.

Sen. Russell Long says Nixon may have erred in asking the Joint Committee on Internal Taxation to review his 1969 to 1972 back taxes. A staff report estimated $476,4431 in four years, while deductions for Nixon’s papers drew the fiercest dispute. Long notes the president might have fared better with an impartial group and that the case was not closed as the committee prepared to act.
Dwight Chapin former appointments secretary to President Nixon says he will fight the perjury conviction to the end after being found guilty on two of three counts for lying to the Watergate grand jury about 1972 campaign dirty tricks. Judge Gesell set sentencing for May 6 and released Chapin on recognizance.
The Washington Public Health Department sponsors a diabetic detection program April 15 through 25 in Washington and nearby towns. Free screening with a finger prick test targets adults over 40 and individuals at risk, with multiple sites listed and hours 1 3 p.m. except Washington on April 25.
The Washington FFA designates Matt Sojka as Member of the Month for 73 74, noting his role as secretary, his 100 feeder pigs Supervised Practice project with his father, and his silver and gold sub-district honors. He chairs Community Service, competes in Extemporaneous Speaking, and participates in football basketball track baseball and 4-H.
