The nationwide United States Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsors the program carried on by each Jaycee chapter. Earl Davis chairs the Washington committees. The monthly sessions orient servicemen before actual entry into the armed services, aiding them in many aspects.
Mrs. Thomas J. Berdo county cancer drive chairman announced the 1951 drive will continue through the end of April due to bad weather and poor roads. She urged solicitors to finish canvassing and turn in funds promptly.
Rex See has been appointed the new scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 32 at the Presbyterian church. All members are urged to attend the first meeting since the leadership change on Thursday evening, April 12. Bob Swartz will remain as assistant.
Richard Gant is named instructor of men's physical education and boys basketball coach at Washington High School effective next school year. He replaces John McConnell as director of athletics, who will pursue further studies at the State University of Iowa. Gant has coached junior college basketball and high school football and track this year and is a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce announces a new farm membership plan at 15 dollars annually to strengthen ties with the Washington County Farm Bureau. President Dave Livingston and Farm Bureau President John Gamon praise closer cooperation, with a joint directors and Junior Chamber meeting planned for next Tuesday to discuss shared goals.
Ice breakup and heavy rain push the Cedar River toward flood levels with a crest forecast near 17 feet over the next 24 to 48 hours. At Waterloo the river sits around 15.2 feet, while Cedar Rapids may rise to about 14.5 feet next week. Red Cross and Salvation Army shelters house evacuees from Riverview.
Carl E. Hering 76 of this county died Friday night after a three week illness. He lived five miles north of Washington and will be buried in Elm Grove cemetery after funeral services Monday at 4 pm at Jones funeral home conducted by Dr. C B Reed and Rev. Walter Smith. Survived by wife Jennie Walker two sisters Rosa Nethergall Emma Humeston a brother Lewis and a half brother Clarence Hering. He was born November 15 1874 in Madonna County Tr and spent over 50 years in Washington after earlier livery work in Macomb I L. He was a Methodist and served seven years as Red Brick school director.
Iowa selective service director R A Lancaster announced that deferment test application blanks will be available at local draft boards within 10 days. Tests to be administered in May and June will determine eligibility for occupational deferment as students, with dates May 26 June 16 and 30 for seniors and others entering graduate or professional schools.
Iowa will begin paving and widening West Madison Street on Monday morning. Traffic will detour along Washington Street from South Second Avenue to South Avenue B, with east and westbound traffic using the same route. Center parking on Washington Street must be cleared by midnight Sunday April 8 to allow trucks access.
In Washington Britain asks the United States to rewrite the Japanese peace treaty to cap Japan's shipbuilding and to clarify whether the U S would seek trusteeship over the Ryuku and Bonin islands. Ambassador Sir Oliver Franks delivered the British proposals to Dean Rusk and John Foster Dulles after Dulles shared the text with 15 wartime allies.
Walter Selmau, 27, of Charlotte, Iowa, won the trucker of the year title and $1,000 for his safety record hauling livestock. Judges praised his performance among nearly 4,000 drivers from 19 states and Canada at the Chicago stockyards event. Leonard Lembke was runner up, with the Frahn Brothers and Bixler taking third place.
Applications are accepted by the secretary of the board of U S Civil Service examiners at the Iowa Ordinance plant in Burlington for the position of inspector ordnance materials products and equipment. Ordnance material inspectors are paid at the rate of 8100 per year. Application forms may be secured from the secretary of U S civil service examining boards at first and second class post offices.
April marks anniversaries for many firms and Smart Implement Co. celebrates 13 years since its 1935 founding in Washington. Originally Smart & Parrish Implement, Bill Smart has led the firm alone since Parrish left to pursue other lines in the tri cities. The business expanded to include International Harvester appliances and equipment with added facilities and staff.
In Cardiff Kenneth Younger condemns “irresponsible statements” from “highly-placed quarters” about Korea and the Far East. He avoids naming General MacArthur while signaling British support for UN peace talks and a possible truce with China.
Dr George Kerr reports the sudden death of his father aged about years at his Oakdale Illinois home Wednesday. The ecard notes Springfield Ohio and Kerrs en route to Oakdale for the funeral. Dr Kerr plans to be in Washington on April 17 or 18.
Two more United Nations divisions crossed the 38th parallel in Korea as the UN drive expanded to about 90 miles. Armored columns pushed into North Korea near Chailli and within eight miles of Kumbhwa while air battles raged with MiG 15s. Red ground resistance remained light. UN forces pressed along the central and west-central fronts with renewed offensives and sporadic enemy withdrawals.
Rev T C Polk pastor of the Christian church in Washington wins the Silver Beaver award for distinguished service to boyhood at a dinner in Iowa Memorial Union Iowa City. Harod W Westermark also receives the award. The event honors Scout leaders with citations and crusade awards go to Troops 33 84 29 3 14 18.
Washington instrumental and vocal students scored eight Division I ratings six Division II ratings and one Division III rating at the Sigourney pre state music contest These awards came as judges faced a larger area competition this year with fewer qualifying events to reach the state meet Vocal groups earned several high marks led by a girls sextet and multiple soloists Instrumental performers received top grades in categories including clarinet solos and quartets The event also announced a Social Security claims and numbers assistance visit to Washington Wellman and the employment office locations on April 11.
Clarence James aged 69 died in Washington this morning after a long illness. Born December 1881 in Washington county he was a son of L C James and Margaret Miller James. He worked twenty years at Mayson Manufacturing in Detroit and is survived by three brothers Glen West Liberty Homer Wapello and S C Conesville and a sister Mrs Charles Hantt of Columbus Junction.

Strong northwesterly winds continue with cool temperatures. highs reach 40 to 50, tonight's low near zero. Sunday remains cloudy and windy with a high around 42. Outlook calls for sunny and warmer conditions Monday and Tuesday.
The District of Columbia Court of Appeals demands the Dollar Steamship Line be returned to R. Stanley Dollar of San Francisco. It cites contempt against Commerce Secretary Charles Sawyer and aides for failure to restore the company. Dollar's ownership is affirmed. government action may proceed in its San Francisco suit for control.
