Sioux City report states Mrs Anna Wiss filed a 25000 damage suit against Frank and Dorothy McCrystal after her hat was blown into the street by wind while she ran to retrieve it.
Des Moines reports that 1 778 WPA workers will be removed by Saturday to reach Iowa's new quota of 28 100 persons. State WPA administrator George J. Keller announced the adjustment.
Davenport article reports a federal grand jury hearing testimony likely to indict Harold J. Kriebs former DeWitt bank cashier on embezzlement charges totaling 83000 dollars. Kriebs declined to comment on a plea if indictment is returned, seated with co defendant Noble King and Judge Charles A. Dewey presiding.
Spirit Lake authorities bound Harry Zahren of Westport township over to the grand jury on bootlegging keeping a liquor nuisance and illegal possession of intoxicating liquor after officers reported finding a quantity of alcohol and whisky on his farm.
Dr. Alto BK Fel Jer of the State University of Iowa Internal Medicine has won a National Research Council fellowship in medical science. He will study bacteriology and immunology at Harvard University, focusing on end immunology.
The Des Moines Ministerial Association protested the United States Army Olympic equestrian team exhibition at the state fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday. Col. D. G. Richart said the two days are the only available for the event and the protest should not interfere. Performances are set for 2:00 p.m. and will feature riding by Iowa National Guardsmen and cavalry from Fort Des Moines.
DES MOINES A bill to drop the European starling bounty from 10 to 6 cents and make payments optional passed the senate 46 to 0 and moves to the house for concurrence in amendments. Counties complained the 10 cent payment depleted funds and some claimed starlings killed in Missouri were brought in for bounties.
MILLERSBURG This town of about 200 population was in the hands of women Mrs Emily Walters a practical nurse elected mayor Mar 27 was sworn in Monday She had announced earlier that she would resign after qualifying In addition the council was made up of five women Mrs Elsie Smith Mrs Myrtle Shank Mrs Ella Wolfe Mrs Jim Gerrard and Mrs Letha Taylor.
Secretary of Commerce Harry Hopkins said at Warm Springs that he will move to Iowa in a few weeks to make Grinnell his permanent home for his daughter Diane. Observers speculated the move could signal a presidential or Senate bid in 1940, but Hopkins denied any political motive and framed the plan as a family homecoming.
An Iowa Daily Press Association survey finds many controversial measures may die in committees as the 48th General Assembly risks a crowded calendar. Senate approved plans include a state teachers pension, civil service rights for highway workers, and other reforms while House passes seem stalled in Senate committees.
Iowa Des Moines April 5 Senate appropriations committee introduces a state budget bill raising operating funds to $17,661,813 per year for two years. The current budget is $13,926,654 with about $2 million net increase after placing self financed departments under budget control. Educational institutions gain $1,088,000 and board of control facilities $696,617. Public safety department receives $824,610 including $461,945 for the highway patrol.
At a Leon Beatty post meeting the American Legion agreed to join the Yea Men’s Big Broadcast at the State theater on April 12 and issued a Challenge to the Legion Auxiliary for a Battle of the Sexes. Suggested quartet members include Maynard Brown and Arnot t Wylie. Upcoming district events include a Washington county meeting at Bright on April 20 and first district gathering at West Liberty on April 27, with fifth district at Sigourney on April 25 and second district at Davenport on April 26. The post also voted to fund its allotment for district colors to be used at meetings.
With weather conditions mostly favorable progress continues on Washington's two new elementary school buildings. Lincoln site on South Fourth avenue nears completion of exterior work while second site awaits start. Excavation mostly done. a construction office shed and equipment car arrived. Earl Wood of Ainsworth, superintendent for Des Moines J. E. Lovejoy company, leads Lincoln contract. Stewart building on North Fourth avenue has brickwork rising, roof steel partially installed, and the stone name plate reading Stewart School mounted above the main entrance.
A large crowd of Masons attended a special meeting in Washington where the lodge joined with other Iowa groups. Realff Otteson of Davenport delivered the grand master address and third degree work was performed. Visitors came from Ottumwa Muscatine Ainsworth Winfield and West Chester. Refreshments were served.
Rome report says Pope Pius will deliver an important Easter speech on international affairs. The broadcast is set for three o'clock in the morning Central Standard Time.
A Legion committee plans to pick three Washington youths to attend the annual Boys State program to study citizenship. The trip is funded by the Legion Rotary club and the Chamber of Commerce. Lunch after the meeting featured pumpkin pie with whipped cream and coffee, organized by Owen Grecian and George Birney.
A large storage shed fire at Roy Buckwalter's Chevrolet garage in Wellman destroyed 12 cars and an old truck with an estimated loss of $10,000. The blaze, aided by a gasoline explosion from Omer Green's oil truck, began in the storage shed and spread to several cars. Fire departments from Wellman Kalona and Washington assisted. cause of the fire remains unknown.
In Albia on April 6 24 ounce baby born to Mr and Mrs Raymond Holgate Fairfield died last night. The infant had been in an incubator since its birth Monday night. Mrs Holgate aged 16 entered the hospital unable to reach home in time for delivery.
Annual reports to the mayor and council cover the City Library with 13 359 volumes and 29 562 circulations, Water and Light Plant net earnings of 9 606 86, and park care costs of 1 633 69. Water mains upgrades followed the North Second underpass, and the City Solicitor notes no litigation with a suggestion to revise ordinances and curb transient traders.
Washington city council met with city assessor Charles E. Lemley to scan the assessors books as a board of review for this year. A few objections were heard and the council planned to complete the labor tonight.
Harold J. Kriebs, former DeWitt National Bank cashier, faced ten counts of embezzlement charged by a federal grand jury. He pleaded guilty and was later sentenced to ten years in prison after investigators traced an $83,000 shortage and recovered most funds. He had disappeared on June 2 and was arrested in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Those who have not yet reserved for the Chamber of Commerce public health committee dinner may call the county health unit office by noon tomorrow. The dinner at the Y begins at 6 30 Thursday evening with Dr. Marvin F. Haygood of the Iowa state department of health speaking on Why Organized Health Service Is Essential. County residents interested in public health matters are urged to attend.
Des Moines April 6 The Iowa supreme court today reversed the murder conviction of Mr and Mrs Lee Coleman of Tracy Iowa and ordered a retrial. They were convicted at Knoxville May 23 1938 on second degree murder in the death of Bert Comrey Knoxville night marshal. Coleman sentenced to 40 years Mrs Coleman 30 years.

Seventy boys aged nine to twelve from the YMCA hiked five miles south of town to Big Rock. Gene Trask and Howard Little led the outing with older boys assisting. The group enjoyed lunch and a large turnout before today’s rain halted the outdoor program.

In Des Moines on April 4, Republican Iowa Senate members moved final approval for the farm to market road bill. The measure passed 4 to 14 after conference adoption 30 to 18 and goes to Governor Wilson for signature. The plan diverts 2 million dollars from primary road funds to farm to market highways with post June 1 1941 primary road money over 16 million annually expected to exceed 1.7 million yearly.
Motor vehicles collided at the city hall corner late yesterday afternoon with no injuries reported and only minor damage. One car was driven away by its operator after the incident.

A morning blaze destroyed a brooder house at the Charles R. Wilson farm one mile south of town, killing about 1,000 chickens. The fire, possibly sparked by a kerosene stove, also damaged 12 hens. insurance covered the poultry and brooder house. John Custer drove the Farmers Mutual fire truck to the scene.
Trial of the King versus Livesey resumed in district court with 11 jurors after juror P Ettar was excused by a funeral. Plaintiff Ida King seeks damages from an automobile collision. witnesses included Dr Miller and Jean Veeter. Grand jury for March term to resume work tomorrow per County Attorney Stewart.
By B. J. Pauley of Washington a collision involving a trailer harmed a vehicle, with the other car owned by a Miami Iowa woman suffering front bumper and fender damage.
