Des Moines industrial science junior Ames Betty Gaylord has been named managing editor of Green Gander, Iowa State College’s magazine of collegiate life, reflecting leadership in campus media.
Des Moines group including 30 ministers led by Rev. Jack L. Neville telegraphed Iowa Democratic congressmen urging a vote against the government reorganization bill. The effort grouped 120 laymen from the Des Moines Evangelistia center with the protest.
Miss Virginia Leslie was crowned 1938 DeMolay sweetheart before more than 300 people. Six DeMolay chapters held business sessions at the meeting in Council Bluffs.
For the first time in its 14 year existence the Des Moines Civic Music association ran a 1938 39 membership drive over subscribed and workers prepared to refund ticket money to those who subscribed too late.
Susan Seeley, 12, of Mount Pleasant remains unconscious after an Albia area auto crash that killed Panten of Chariton. Four other Seeley family members showed improvement from injuries. Police investigated the west Albia wreck involving multiple vehicles.
Polk grand jury bound 31 year old Alma Sherrow over on charges of failing to give aid to an injured boy after witnesses testified to a collision between a car she drove and a bicycle ridden by Billy Parks a 10 year old boy in Des Moines Alma Sherrow faces a legal action based on the incident with the child and the bicycle rider.
Onawa and Monona county farmers gather outside Justice of Peace Robert Underhill to protest the firing of charges against Cyril Jirovsky of Blencoe for firing at wild geese eating wheat in his fields. Farmers say birds damage crops each spring as they pause on their northward return.
An eight year old boy, son of Mr and Mrs James Coleman, living in the southeast part of Buchanan county, died after his clothing caught fire from a bonfire he approached too closely. The tragedy occurred when he moved too near the flames and suffered fatal burns.
Mrs J T Main wife of the late PP Main former Grinnell College president died Sunday afternoon at her home after a three month illness. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. Funeral services are undecided pending arrival of relatives.
Contests to the city election filed with City Clerk Leo Billings by Chris Rasmussen and John Anderson of the Peoples ticket. Canvass shows Rasmussen defeated for councilman at large by Carl I. Anderson and John Anderson defeated for councilman in the first ward by three votes.
State and district conferences of teachers and students were scheduled at an executive committee meeting of the Iowa Vocational Homemaking association. The dates for the state meeting were set tentatively for Aug. 15 18 at Iowa State college Ames. A state conference for high school firm also will be held in connection with the state meeting.
Des Moines Iowa farm groups report that the federal government has lent about 11 million dollars to corn growers in Iowa while they hold nearly 28 million bushels. H Pieterich notes the Agricultural Conservation Committee findings and shows 28 267 corn moisture samples tested with fewer than 2 percent rejected for excess moisture.
Washington county sheep producers will gather at the courthouse on Wednesday evening April 6 at 8 o clock to discuss boosting profits in sheep raising. A portable dipping tank plan will let a trained operator dip sheep at farms, improving wool next year by reducing ticks and lice on ewes and lambs. The meeting will also finalize the Washington County Sheep and Wool Producers Association bylaws. Officers named include Robert Owen president Rh Tanner vice president and Lester Macon secretary treasurer.
Washington county petit jurors for the March term were told they need not report tomorrow as no cases were set for trial. Judge Sievers began hearing A C C Gustafson of Des Moines versus S W Brookhart. deposition evidence from Senator Brookhart will be used. Gustafson sues for funds advanced during Brookhart's 1982 senate campaign to cover office rent, telephones, postage and expenses. Brookhart denies the claims.
Paris reports Premier Leo Blom urged sweeping powers to regulate France during the financial emergency from rearmament. He proposed: heavy capital tax at 4.5 percent, bearer bonds banned with registration, centralization of foreign securities trading at the Bank of France, revaluation of gold holdings, special taxes on rearmament profits, higher customs duties, and modification of the forty hour week in defense industries.
Adel a Stone 79 died yesterday morning at the home of her daughter Mrs J F Frain in West Point Iowa after a major operation last fall She had lived in Brighton years ago moving to West Point three years ago Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 AM in the Brighton Methodist church with Rev KF Meier officiating Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery She is survived by her daughter four sons a sister and many grandchildren and great grandchildren
Ellen Knox of Oakland California plans a two week visit to join sisters Ruth and Lucille Knox. She will stay until after Ruth Knox's wedding to Laurence DeWitt.
Des Moines April 4 In an open letter Iowa Taxpayers Association secretary Joe L Long warned county city and school officials against levying taxes beyond approved needs He cited end of last fiscal year unexpended balances of 79 million dollars equal to more than 130 for each of Iowas 690000 families He proposed returning half the surplus to taxpayers next year and using the rest for operating costs and potential needs to boost business conditions
Five members of the United Presbyterian church board of elders were re elected for twelve year terms at yesterday service. Names include Dr. J. C. Boice H. L. Walker H. H. McCleery H. R. Van Noastrand and D. N. Anwyl. The annual congregational meeting will be Thursday with a pot luck dinner at 6 30 and officers to be elected. Rev E E Grice of the United Presbyterian mission in Egypt will preach next Sabbath morning and evening.
Immediate suspension of Cedar County board of supervisors members was ordered in Tipton Iowa by Judge Carl J Shaw. The four named officials are John P Jensen West Liberty Fred C Daut Wilton Junction Louis Hanson Stanwood and G D Goldsmith Clarence. Ouster charges were filed by County Attorney Ray A Potter alleging willful habitual neglect refusal to perform duties and maladministration.
Washington D C April 4 1935 Washington county joins a new white collar WPA project to transcribe and analyze marriage and divorce records from 1880 to 1935. The effort covers 39 Iowa counties including Washington Louisa Des Moines Scott Jackson Clayton Winneshiek and more with 16104 federal funds approved and Des Moines as administrative HQ.
Mrs B C Hebensberger of Colorado Springs visits her parents Mr and Mrs Carl Hedges. Mrs O C Boshart and Mrs A S Allen of Wayland and Mrs Will F E Jones of Cotter come to see Mrs Hedges who had a major operation this morning at Washington County Hospital.
The Cornell college symphony orchestra drew a full Methodist church crowd for its thirty fourth annual concert tour. Lloyd Oakland conducted a program including A Life for the Czar and Scheherazade with soloist Albert Klingler, plus Danse Espagnole by Geraldine Bryant. Forty percent of receipts were pledged to the local church to aid youth institutes. The group then traveled by bus to Polo, Michigan, for another engagement.
Congressional leaders forecast a relief appropriation around 2.0 billion dollars to cover WPA and related activities for the next fiscal year starting July 1, doubling the January estimate while Hopkins favored about 2.5 billion. The House appropriations committee plans hearings around April 15 as Roosevelt weighs whether to keep the one billion budget figure.
Everett Smart aged 55 of Washington was arraigned for driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He admitted guilt and was ordered held to the district court under 500 dollars bond after a Sunday arrest near the high school building when his car backed into Harry Sisler’s vehicle. He awaits district court arraignment likely early this week.
