Jeff Temple of Keota and Cathy Walker of Washington lead Washington County 4-H at the Area 4-H State Officer candidate selection in Iowa City. About 12 members compete in Cedar Rapids Extension Area at an April 3 dinner. Three will advance to the state competition later in April. Jeff and Cathy have eight years in 4-H and serve on the County 4-H Council. Mrs Leroy Mineart of Brighton serves on the selection committee.

LaPorte voters approve 1.08 million high school bond
Voters in LaPorte approve a 1 080 000 bond for adding to the high school, winning 824 to 270 with 74 percent. The addition will serve as the new junior high adjacent to the current school, replacing the 81 year old building. The state fire marshal had urged discontinuing use of the old junior high.

Mariner 10 to Shut Down Early in Mercury Flyby Plans

Mystery man aboard fishing boat ends in self-inflicted death
Miami police seek FBI help to identify a young man who chartered the Play Baby for a half day of fishing. He later pulled a .357 revolver, threatened the crew, and killed himself overboard. Skipper Benny Spaulding and first mate Steve Tellam recovered his body.
