Washington April 2 The war production board banned the fifty dernier rayon full fashion stockings deemed too delicate and ordered rayon stockings with semi high tenacity yarns for better serviceability. The change lowers sheer appearance but boosts strength and does not aim for British utility style.
Iowa City April 2. Dr Charles R Brown dean emeritus of Yale Divinity School will speak at the University of Iowa sixtieth class reunion as plans for the early commencement proceed. About 00 applications for awards reflect wartime conditions and an earlier May 10 date last year. The field house ceremony begins at 1 45 p m on Easter Sunday with graduates attending a supper on April 22. Dr Brown is 80 years old.
Rev. Arthur Peters will become the pastor of the Federated church at West Chester and the New Haven Baptist church between Washington and West Chester. He succeeds Dr. J. B. Pollock who retired for age and health. Peters, from a family of Baptist ministers, has served in Spencer and Ralston Iowa and was with the Union Gospel Mission in St. Paul.
Mrs Leila Mae Bunch of Iowa City wife of Kenneth Cecil Bunch aviation radiomen first class killed in the South Pacific was notified by the navy department that a new destroyer escort will be named the U S S Bunch after her husband. She will sponsor the launching of the ship.
Today's county report shows Red Cross War Fund total of 7284 dollars about half of the 15000 dollar county quota. Receipts yesterday 543.11 include 289.35 from Wellman area where canvass is incomplete. Wellman town surpassed its 1200 quota with 1203.10.
Secretary of State Cordell Hull said Russia Great Britain and China were among the first nations to accept invitations to the United Nations conference on postwar food problems to be convened in Washington on April 27.
Holland chairs a Washington county campaign to secure 820000 in war bonds before May. The effort targets wealthy investors, adds two new bond issues, and mobilizes bankers from Jefferson, Keokuk, Johnson, and others to hit the April quota based on local bank deposits. Authorities urge purchases through county bankers.
President Roosevelt vetoed the Bankhead farm parity bill calling it inflationary and dangerous to stabilization efforts. He urged Congress to reject the measure as it would deduct farm benefit payments from parity price calculations and affect price ceilings and the war effort.
Seacusus restaurant owner Marx Bucher offers five fresh hamburgers as reward for return of his hat. The note specifies the reward is today's offer and targets the hat’s recovery.

A residence and its belongings were almost completely destroyed late yesterday afternoon in the southeast part of town. The Ted Coffman family occupied the house. the fire’s cause is unknown. Coffman works in the tri cities and his wife was visiting a neighbor when the blaze started. The fire department arrived promptly, but the fire was already extensive. Chief H. H. Reister said the property was nearly a total loss. Most items belonging to the Coffman family were lost.
Chairman Robert L. Doughton of the House Ways and Means Committee walked out and returned home in Laurel Springs North Carolina telling the congressional directory he would not reconvene the committee until April 17 when the reciprocal trade act renewal would be on the agenda.
Chicago April 2 UP A federal grand jury indicted 218 persons for alleged conspiracy to violate federal lottery laws in four nationwide rings. Assistant U.S. District Attorney Maurice Walsh said the number was the largest in a single lottery case. Twenty four defendants were from Iowa. Indictments named principal salesmen and agents for the Mutual Lucky Strike Fair and Square Flyer pools. The pools handled a two million dollar annual business.

Funeral services for Mrs Elmer Horning were held yesterday as family and friends gathered to pay tribute to the late woman. Pallbearers and clergy participated in a somber ceremony at the local church, followed by interment in the family plot.
