Centerville Native Joins Washington Police Patrol

Ben Hodge formerly of Centerville joins the Washington Police Department as a patrolman, filling a vacancy after Richard Stoops left for a deputy sheriff post in Liberal Kansas. The department has also accepted a new police car to be put into service soon.

Washington High Student Named District Council President

Chris Scheldrup, a Washington High student, was elected president of the District Student Council at a spring workshop in West Point. The district comprises 35 high schools and over 10,000 students. As president he will attend state conventions and workshops and may go to the national convention in Atlanta. He will organize district workshops and liaison meetings with Ernest Beenblossom, the district advisor and Washington High guidance counselor.

Wapello Man Died by Drowning Found in Iowa River

Autopsy in Columbus Junction Iowa indicates 34 year old David Lee Wakeland died from drowning after his body was found in shallow water near the Iowa 92 bridge by a fisherman. Louisa County sheriff's office said Wakeland had been in the water since about 9 p.m. Sunday and foul play is not suspected as investigation continues.

April Fool amendment targets massage parlors in lawmakers lounge

A mocked amendment in the Iowa House proposed creating legislative massage parlors in the men's lounge from 9 to 10 pm with a special rate for egos. It was attached to a helmet law bill but would have struck the title to establish the massage parlors.

Elderly West Palm Beach woman dies of malnutrition

Mrs. Bertha Adams, 71, who begged for food and wore Salvation Army clothes, was committed to a nursing home by relatives. She died Sunday from malnutrition, leaving nearly 1 million dollars in cash and stocks.

Kalona pool plan moves forward with federal aid hope

Kalona consulting engineers presented a rough draft of a comprehensive recreation plan centered on a municipal pool. The plan seeks federal match funds from the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation and was tentatively approved, with Herman Thompson & Associates to finalize the study. Frank N. Stein, a 25 year old mute Transylvanian immigrant, is held without bond after attempting to steal Blair House on April Fool's Day. Authorities say he intended to load the building on a red wagon on highway 92 before dawn. Blair House was recovered unharmed and returned to its foundation.
