Thousands of Civil War veterans gathered near Gettysburg to honor fallen comrades. Officials report more than 50 000 veterans camped on hilltops despite heat waves, with 30 000 attending ceremonies and dozens of deaths or illnesses caused by conditions.

A man dies in an accident as a heavy bolt hits him full force. His wife and young children witness the event. The clothing is burned away and the body is severely burned and discolored.
A flash of lightning struck Stewart McCoy aged 10 as he ran across a wheat field near Hoopmongebore on a harvest day. He died instantly, his clothing melted and body scorched, in front of his wife and four grieving children as workers carried him home through heavy rain. Coroner L P Howell investigated the scene with Foster Pearson and other farmhands present.
