New York January 28 report on the steel rail pool collapse of 1897 detailing Andrew Carnegie’s price cutting and control of the industry. A proposed law to establish a Legislative Reference Department is set for passage this afternoon. The move follows a broader reorganization plan affecting the state banking and building and loan departments with hearings on license bills to precede final action.
Columbus, Jan. 28. House Democrats voted against allowing a Republican backed probe of state departments. A bipartisan inquiry proposed by Rep. Jenkins was promptly referred to the fees and salaries committee and expected to die there. A Democratic majorit y committee would handle any future investigation. The Black bill creating a legislative reference department was set as a special order for passage and the Frick resolution urging Congress to enact a law benefiting good roads through deposited interest was adopted.
Judge Warren Gard will speak at the final hearing on saloon license bills in the hall of the house. Superintendent Wheeler of the Anti-Saloon league will summarize the dry arguments. Other speakers will represent both sides as plans to reorganize state banking and building and loan departments seek to offset a $100,000 expense with revenue. Governor Cox has tasked Baxter and Devine with the restructuring, noting the banking department runs at a loss and that the building and loan department requires annual treasury support.
Treasury experts estimate the continental population near 96 million and total money in circulation at 3,480 million dollars. Per capita money in circulation is about 34.72 dollars.
