President elect Wilson's disapproval of modern dances such as the turkey trot grizzly bear and bunny hug helped prompt the decision to call off the inaugural ball. A close committee friend cited newspaper reports on the dances and the ball's cost to the government as influencing factors.
Detective Peter Hart died after exchanging shots with an alleged automobile bandit at a flat on 1617 Wabash Avenue. The suspect fled after wresting Hart's revolver and firing the weapon in the confrontation.
New York on January 21 Arthur Bin vice president of the Einstein acting company and a leather concern executive is accused in a separation suit filed by his wife Manuella N Einstein. She alleges prolonged cruelty and says he keeps her as his mistress, seeks 150 a week alimony plus 1500 in counsel fees for herself and their three year old daughter Hortense. The petition states he is in a sanitarium and believes his mind is deteriorating due to his habits.
In Columbus on January 21 the first public hearing before the joint temperance committees pitted wets against drys over Acker bill and brewers’ bill sleep er charges. Governor Cox and Speaker Swain observed as Secretary Andreae defended the brewers’ plan and Wheeler of the Anti Saloon League attacked it. Judge Black objected to shielding saloonkeepers from selling to minors. The second hearing was set for later, with Andreae citing Governor Cox on the state board system and promising penalties on bad saloonkeepers. A separate rush by Sen Cook proposed easing food exports to curb rising living costs.
Attorneys for anthracite railroads conferred with Interstate Commerce Commission officials as the agency investigates coal rate setting. The hearing precedes testimony in New York starting January 27, with focus on alleged railroad control of mines and impact on independent producers and consumer prices. He flashed a five year contract assuring employment at 15000 dollars annually until April 15 1914. Fresh at end of notice likely a related update.
A $100,000 libel suit by actress Edith Taliaferro against Dean BE Larrabee Weaver of Spencer Trask & Co. was settled out of court. Weaver admitted his letter to his wife describing rides with the actress was false. the letter surfaced during divorce and alimony proceedings.
Thirty miners entombed in Tyndale Mine No 1, Columbus Coal and Mining, Coshocton Ohio, were dragged up an air shaft to the surface after rains weakened earth and crushed timbers. A driver discovered the collapse and lowered a rope to pull each man out. Some rescuers were faint from exhaustion and foul air.
Andrew Carnegie gave $25 000 to Andrew D White for Cornell University. White plans to apply the money to the student loan fund rather than install an organ in the new auditorium.
Washington January 21 by a 152 to 65 vote the house approved the Peters bill granting articles of incorporation to the Rockefeller foundation for 1000009000 the measure moves to the senate where it is expected to pass and become law before adjournment of this congress

Senate good roads chairman Senator Hudson and House counterpart Hite introduced bills to tax state property to fund intercounty highways and main market roads, use prison labor for state aid work, and codify road laws. Levy amounts differ: Senate half mill, House three quarters. both aim to fund main roads while counties handle wagon roads locally.
Trenton January 21. Governor Wilson backed seven bills to reform New Jersey corporate law. The measures bar creation of holding companies and watered stock schemes while permitting lawful growth by purchase. They define trusts, prohibit monopolies, and penalize misdeeds with prison terms and charter revocation for noncompliance.
Washington Jan 21 The Interstate Commerce Commission will investigate the affairs of the American Telephone and Telegraph company based on a letter from Attorney General Wickersham. The letter alleges the so called trust sought to buy competing lines discriminated against Postal Telegraph in favor of Western Union charged exorbitant rates where no competition existed and refused connections to independent firms.
Report claims noted thieves of Russia organized a convention in a Moscow restaurant, denouncing police while police arrested guests at a wedding feast. The thieves formed a cooperative and sent resolutions to the police prefect.
