At a meeting last Friday evening the Webster Debating Club organized a football team with E. P. Holgren named captain and trainer. The group plans to begin engagements and play is expected to start around October 6.
Republican County Convention at the Court House elected D W Corning as chairman and H C Hale as secretary. Delegates chosen for Wm O Neil include Corning Clausen Meehan Mussell Blix Lien Lea with Washburn Bayfield Drummond Mason Iron River. The Senatorial Convention meets in Ashland next Tuesday with O Neil expected to be nominated.
Andrew I. Lien visits River Falls, Lon Shafer visits Sunday, and a daughter born to Mr. and Mrs. Louis McIlrath. County fair attendance at Iron River and hospital construction progress are noted. James Kinnie sells his grocery to Jack Jackson who will run a saloon. Sheriff race narrows to John McKay and Ole Johnson with McKay favored. Foley’s Honey and Tar advertised by Owen Frost Co. Mrs. Dahl receives $1000 life Insurance from I S W A. Bayfield banks show nearly $200,000 on deposit, a record since 1893 reflecting prosperity. Barbers and clerks win their game. a window lock sale is advertised. Will Carson gun incident discussed with humorous caution.
Republican caucuses to elect delegates to the county convention will be held Saturday evening from 7 to 10 o'clock. Voters should support delegates aligned with their preferred county officers and all Republicans are urged to attend.
The region shows expansion with abundant hardwood timber lands, iron ore, clay, kaolin and mural resources, plus improving roads and schools. The Wisconsin Central Ry provides strong transit to markets. maps and pamphlets available from W. H. Killan and colleagues in Milwaukee for interested parties.
Sunday marks the annual rally for Congregational Church groups with sermons, solos, and department talks. The XIII Club, named for its number, plans biweekly dances at Mason Hall despite superstitions, with officers listed and first dance next Friday.
James McCormick a cook at an A A Bigelow camp vanished about a week ago after acting queerly and possibly wandering into the woods. Sheriff Sullivan led searches with camp crews scouring the area but found nothing. He is well known in Washburn and among lumbermen.
The Democratic center committee rejected a request by Hon. George C. Cooper to visit and speak. They imply voters are not receptive to Democratic speakers, noting resistance and a frosty reception as the political climate stiffens.
Gilbert Oleson announces he will not seek the Republican nomination for sheriff and thanks friends for their support ahead of the caucuses next Saturday evening.
