Gas Explosion Wrecks Thielke Tin Shop injuring man

An explosion in the Thielke Tin shop rear of the Lamoreaux Hotel damaged the building and fired a gasoline lead pot. Elmer Oistad of Clausen Oistad was cut across face and leg, sustaining facial wounds and stitches after escaping the blast. Fire was put out by a Pyrene extinguisher before the department arrived.

Call to Bayfield County Women to Knit for War Relief

A call from the American Red Cross urges all women to knit 200 sets of socks wristlets sweaters and mufflers for Bayfield County to aid American soldiers in France and Belgian refugees. The Red Cross provides yarn and instructions, and asks every capable person to contribute, noting the severe winter and widespread need abroad.

A Buzz from the Hornets Nest calendar program

A calendar program at the hall next Saturday night will entertain the public. The Hornet Club reports good attendance at the last meeting with a successful pies and lunch sale raising 24.10 dollars. A three member committee attended a federation meeting at Mr Brabakers office and learned of potential improvements in Washburn marketing. Thieves have stripped several city clothes lines and other thefts are being investigated by police.

The Camp Douglas Wis September 3 1917 appoints non commissioned officers for Company D Bayfield County in the 6th Wisconsin Regiment. Fire damages Washburn block Lion Plumbing shop destroyed

A Saturday 3 am fire gutted the Lion Plumbing Shop in the Fox building, with flames threatening Fox Bros drug store and Gem Theatre. Firefighters confined the blaze quickly, saving neighboring structures. Lion Plumbing stock nearly lost, building beyond repair after repeated past fires.

Man Nearly Severes Thumb While Trimming Tree

Louis Gordon of Bayfield County Telephone sustains a near complete thumb amputation while chopping limbs that touched overhead wires on Wednesday. He received prompt first aid and was taken to a local clinic for treatment.

Badly Injured in Fall From Dock at Northwestern Fuel

Thomas Smolen a laborer fell forty feet from a gun pole at Northwestern Fuel docks this morning. He sustained a severe scalp wound and multiple injuries. By noon his condition was described as very serious and semi conscious.

Oscar J. Caron of Co. E 6th Telegraph Battalion U S R writes from Fort Leavenworth Kansas to Washburn Times reporter W A Robinson. He reports alive and well in Army life, praises local support for Washburn’s Co D, notes heavy training, and expects to sail overseas soon. Local cars report flashlight losses blamed on youths

A number of automobile owners in the city report missing flashlights and other items from cars left on the street. The theft appears to be the work of boys. Ed Johnson of Clinton, Iowa arrived Saturday night for a two week visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Johnson.
